Position Summary

Children’s Council envisions a San Francisco where every child has nurturing caregivers who foster their social,

emotional and cognitive development and where caregivers have the skills to support children’s development and run successful businesses. For decades, we have worked in partnership with community stakeholders to support the early care and education field. Through training, technical assistance, coaching and shared business administration resources, the Provider Services Team assists new programs through the licensing process and helps all programs hone their skills as early educators and business owners.

Our Provider Services Team is at an exciting moment. We are clarifying our vision and bringing more cohesion and

funding to expand our services.

Our five-year goals include:

• Bringing more caregivers into the licensing and quality-improvement pipeline.

• Helping all caregivers deepen child development knowledge and skills.

• Building business administration capacity among licensed family child care (FCC) programs.

• Helping providers prepare for, navigate and access government funding.

• Supporting growth of high-quality leaders in the early childhood education (ECE) field.

The Business Supports Manager will incrementally build-out our FCC Business Incubator and associated services;

designing solutions that meet the needs of FCC educators and increase their capacity to provide high-quality care. In

addition, the Manager will continue to build-out and oversee ECE Shared Resources California—a web-based portal that provides high-quality program administration, regulatory, HR, marketing and training resources to streamline business operations so educators can focus the children.

The core responsibility of the Business Supports Manager is to design and implement responsive solutions that increase ECE programs’ capacity to provide high-quality care and run successful business. In the context of that responsibility, the Manager will:

• Employ a human-centered approach to understand customer needs and design responsive content, services and

marketing strategies—all in the context of system-wide quality-improvement goals.

• Communicate a clear and actionable vision to achieve goals and continuously improve programs.

• Cultivate and maintain partnerships with key stakeholders—ECE programs, community-based organizations, funders and content experts—in a manner that engenders rapport and credibility.

• Motivate direct reports (initially, one Business and Quality Coach) and peers to explore innovative solutions; contribute to healthy team morale.

• Analyze service utilization and solicit customer feedback to assess progress and impact of programs.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelors’ degree and five years’ experience in related field.

• Demonstrated success managing projects that include balancing the needs of multiple stakeholders and creatively

improving systems.

• Knowledge of and experience with small business development, family child care, workforce or economic


• Basic understanding of best practices for small businesses, such as accounting basics, marketing, taxes and


• Experience coaching and mentoring adult learners.

• Experience with project management (preferably at a nonprofit.)

• Excellent oral and written communicator, including ability to support a non-technical audience.

• Outstanding interpersonal skills, including the ability to engage and coordinate diverse stakeholders.

• Commitment to and passion for Children’s Council’s mission.

Physical Requirements

• Mental acuity to perform the essential functions of this position in an accurate and timely fashion.

• Dexterity to use office equipment; the ability to sit and work at a desk for extended periods of time.

• Ability to speak, hear, and understand speech at normal room levels.

• Physical agility to bend, stoop, walk, climb four flights of stairs if required
