The Young People’s Chorus of New York City (YPC) is a multicultural youth chorus internationally renowned not only for its superb virtuosity and brilliant showmanship, but also as a model for an inclusive society that is being replicated globally. Founded 30 years ago by Francisco J. Núñez, this groundbreaking program harnesses the power of music to benefit children musically, academically, and socially. Over 1,700 children from ages 8 to 18 participate annually through its core after-school program, its in-school Satellite Program in 18 New York City public schools, and two thriving after-school Community Choruses in Washington Heights and at Goddard Riverside Community Center. Francisco Núñez was honored with a MacArthur Fellowship for creating a unique paradigm that integrates children from broad ethnic, cultural and economic strata to achieve artistic excellence. Among YPC’s many awards is the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award - America’s highest honor for youth programs. Its commitment to artistic excellence and diversity inspires frequent invitations for collaborations and performances from a global array of festivals, cultural institutions, and cities on four continents, and its commitment to education ensures that 100% of its graduates go on to college. 

 

Position Overview

The organization has an immediate requirement for a professional with a minimum of 5 years of experience in finance or operations management to fill in the role as Accountant reporting to the Director of Finance. The ideal candidate has superb organizing and prioritizing skills, meeting deadlines and staying on top of important details. S/he have a strong analytical mind and problem-solving skills that allow to find the right solutions in time-sensitive scenarios. This Accountant provides YPC’s finance support in the area of Accounting Management to ensure prudent use of organizational funds. S/he is will work with the Director of Finance on accounting including financial reporting, including budgeting, payroll, accounts payable, and receivable, cash receipts, grants finance, and scholarships.

 

General Position Responsibilities

Operational Specifics:

ACCOUNTING MANAGEMENT

  • Work on payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable and contributions;
  • Make bank deposits and execute electronic transactions;
  • Work on the general ledger, calculate cash flow & assist in forecasting, conduct bank and other reconciliations and assist with all accounts & investments;
  • Provide financial advice and guidance to the Director of Finance
  • Work cooperatively with external auditor in preparation of audited financial statements and Form 990 and ensures all necessary filings are completed;
  • Prepare and monitor grant budgets in collaboration with Director of Development;
  • Participate in ongoing strategic planning process with senior management team to help oversee budgetary planning and cost containment in alignment with plan;
  • Help prepare monthly operating income/expense statements, restricted funds statements (including annual operating cash flow and working capital requirements) and other financial reports for the administrative staff, committees, and the Board of Trustees;
  • Coordinate and manage cost & revenue data analysis and reporting for each program and concert.
  • Work with the Registrar and Operations Coordinator to track scholarships
  • Help Director of Finance with Finance Committee oversight is Responsible for banking and investments.
  • Help to maintain close working relationships with banks and investment firms.
  • Monitor cash balances and cash flow and invests available funds including temporarily and permanently restricted (cash reserve) funds.


Administrative MANAGEMENT:

  • Maintain current knowledge on employment and work-related tax rules.;
  • Serves as liaison for all legal, insurance, royalty and licensing issues;
  • Help manage general office operations, including purchase orders, inventory, equipment and insurance;
  • Familiarity with FASB accounting;
  • Help prepare monthly payroll for outside vendor and year-end reports including W 2, 1099 Misc., and 1099 R information;
  • Help process new hires – payroll setup, and new hire reporting;
  • Manage and maintain all contracts with program partners and vendors.
  • When necessary, may be required to oversee weekend concert productions.

 

Qualifications/Requirements:

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5-7 years experience in Non-profit accounting management and controls;
  • Bachelor’s degree required; major in accounting or finance, CPA preferred
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks, or other accounting software;
  • Experience working with Paychex payroll system;
  • Proficient in Excel (including pivot tables), Access and Word;
  • Experience preparing for non-profit annual audit;
  • Strong (written and verbal) communication skills;
  • Experience preparing end of month reporting, including closing books, bank reconciliations, and basic financial modeling;
