Tricycle: The Buddhist Review is the first magazine to present Buddhist perspectives to a Western readership, and the leading independent journal of Buddhism in the West. Tricycle’s readership includes longtime practitioners, those who are curious about Buddhism or meditation, and any who value the teachings of wisdom and compassion that Buddhism has to offer.


We are currently looking for a Managing Editor to join our NYC-based team. The Managing Editor is responsible for managing and delivering high-quality original content for the magazine and website, most notably overseeing the production of the quarterly magazine and its associated workflow.


Responsibilities

 

Content Development

 

·     Work with authors and contributing editors to develop, assign, and deliver original story ideas, helping to ensure that Trike Daily meets its daily goals and the quarterly issue is full

·     Participate in staff pitch and editorial meetings and contribute original work to the magazine and Trike Daily

·     Delegate editorial responsibilities to Tricycle editorial staff members

·     Edit several columns and features each issue cycle

·     Maintain relationship with existing authors, contributing editors, and artists

·     Stay informed of current events and discussion topics of interest to modern Buddhist practitioners

 

Content Management & Flow

 

·     Create author and artist contracts for the magazine and Trike Daily

·     Manage art and editorial budgets for the magazine

·     Enter copy edits and liaison with contributors to address any issues

·     Create magazine map

·     Oversee editorial deadlines for print to ensure a streamlined work flow, including in-house staff

 

Production Management

 

·     Oversee design, art, and production teams, including the art director, photo editor, copy editor, and proofreader

·     Enter copy editing and proofreading changes in layout

·     Liaison with advertising staff on ad sales and advertisement placement

·     Manage press schedule and work with press staff to ensure a high-quality and consistent magazine product and meet press deadlines

·     Oversee quarterly web upload


Requirements and Personal Qualifications

 

Required Experience:


·     3+ years of editorial experience required; experience working in a nonprofit environment a plus

·     Knowledge and interest of Buddhism, Buddhist practice, and the contemporary Buddhist landscape

·     Working knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop

·     Ability to manage a strict schedule and deliver content on deadline

·     Ability to communicate well with a variety of personalities

·     Ability to work well independently as well as part of a team

·     Ability to multi-task

·     Meticulous and high attention to detail

·     Thorough knowledge of grammar rules and an eye for editing copy

·     Strong organizational skills
