HURIDOCS is seeking an experienced Project Manager to join our diverse global team, with focus on projects in Africa and Asia. The Project Manager will ensure the successful delivery of information management systems and reliable advice to our organisational partners who are working on human rights investigations and documentation.

The Project Manager works closely with our partners to understand their information goals, needs, and challenges. Bringing in HURIDOCS’ perspective and experience, the Project Manager will work with the partner using the agile methodology. When the project is agreed upon, the Project Manager will lead the project team to deliver the product and/or services, while continuously communicating progress updates to all involved.

Candidates should be passionate about human rights and have a working knowledge of current information and technology challenges facing the sector.

  • Salary and benefits: Competitive for a human rights NGO (start salary depending on location and experience; e.g. based in Nairobi, Kenya (index 35 vs. Geneva, Switzerland): USD 1,820 - 2,345 + social benefits). HURIDOCS staff has 20 days of paid vacation, in addition to year-end office closing and local bank holidays.

  • Location: Most likely, the candidate will work remotely from Africa or Asia, but we are open to other arrangements. The HURIDOCS office is in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • Start date: 1 September 2019 (or earlier) is desired

Duties and Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of the Project Manager at HURIDOCS are:

  • Outreach to human rights organisations who could benefit from improved information management. Follow up, provide advice, refer to other organisations or resources when appropriate, and coordinate timely, ongoing communication when needed.
  • Coordinate requirements gathering with partner.
  • Create, communicate and manage the project plan and other project related documentation and provide updates and revisions as necessary. Maintain project documentation, including contracts, budgets, addendums, wireframes, etc.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with team members, partners and other stakeholders (consultants, external developers) throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Proactively addresses partner needs and expectations.
  • Lead the project team (UX, developers, partners, project managers, and others). This includes clear and focused communications on progress, challenges, opportunities, and advice.
  • Document issues and track them to resolution. Escalates issues and decisions as appropriate.
  • Ensure the timely and effective delivery of the product and/or services at agreed upon date; quality and budget.
  • Document and report the outcome of projects for partners, funders, and HURIDOCS according to deadlines and format requirements.
  • Develop project proposals and contribute to other fundraising, e.g. by representing HURIDOCS in public and private events.
  • Identify and develop reusable resources for the HURIDOCS community (guides, templates, demos, etc).
  • Closely collaborate with other HURIDOCS Project Managers (4) to share good practices, challenges, advice and solutions.
  • Maintain an overview of past projects, coordinate regular follow up for quality assurance, MEL (monitoring, evaluation and learning) and relationship-building.

Skills and Competencies

The position requires strong organisational and networking skills, and a good knowledge of human rights documentation and technology in practice.

Candidates should demonstrate strong skills and competency in:

  • Investigating and documenting human rights violations
  • The role of technology in the human rights and transitional justice space
  • Interpersonal, analytical and organisational skills
  • Capable of working both independently and collaborating with a remote team

Additional skills and competencies that are desirable:

  • Experience in project management and a familiarity with the agile methodology for technology development projects.
  • Knowledge of databases and information management systems.
  • Excellent speaking and writing skills in English. Other languages are desirable, particularly French.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative to solve problems, and keep projects on track.
  • Flexible and willing to accept a change in priorities as necessary.
  • Excellent time-management skills and the ability to work on multiple long-range projects at the same time.
  • Proactive communication, ability to work remotely and with colleagues in different time zones.
