5th and 6th Grade Math Teacher

Manhattan Country School seeks an experienced math teacher who brings passion and skill to teaching and working with children, as well as a commitment to social justice, equity, and diversity. MCS is in the process of doubling enrollment, and this will be the first time that we have a departmentalized math teacher for 5th and 6th grades. The 5th and 6th grade math teacher will work in close collaboration with the 5th and 6th grade homeroom teachers and will report to the Upper School Director. This is an in-person position. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The 5th and 6th grade math teacher engages students in an inquiry-based curriculum that balances conceptual understanding and number sense with skill building, efficiency, and accuracy. The Upper School uses the Connected Math Program as a base, along with other resources. Incorporating social justice into math classes is an important value. We have a documented curriculum, and there is room for teachers to develop and refine curriculum. The math teacher will

  • oversee the 5th and 6th grade math program, teaching number sense, factors and multiples, division, fractions, decimals, percent, ratios, geometry, probability, and statistics
  • incorporate differentiation in the math curriculum to meet the needs of a range of students
  • participate in annual special math events and activities, including the Pi Day and the Social Justice Data Fair
  • collaborate with the 7th and 8th grade math teacher to adjust and refine vertical alignment
  • give students regular feedback and communicate with families, including writing reports and leading conferences
  • accompany students on two 1-week trips to our Catskills farm
  • possibly teach an elective
  • fulfill other various duties, including lunch and park coverage
  • collaborate with the 5th and 6th grade team on sustaining a dynamic program and developing interdisciplinary opportunities, including social justice work


Requirements and Qualifications

  • Full-time teaching experience 
  • Masters degree in math or math education preferred
  • Strong knowledge of child development and progressive education
  • Provide examples of innovative pedagogy to promote inquiry and learning in adolescents and evidence of capable writing
  • Command a range of teaching methods to meet different learning needs
  • Ability to work closely with a dedicated team of teachers, the math coordinator, and the Upper School director
  • Integrate technology, including Google applications, laptops/iPads, smartboard/projector, math applications, etc.
  • Self-starter, take initiative, have a sense of humor, and demonstrate strong listening and communication skills
  • Prior experience in a diverse community or working collaboratively to engage youth in community-building, social and environmental justice, and activism is a plus
