The New York Foundling (“The Foundling”) is currently seeking a dynamic, dedicated Tutor Supervisor to lead a team of tutors in The Dorm Project.

The Dorm Project is a collaboration between The Foundling, New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), and The City University of New York (CUNY) that connects youth in foster care who are attending a CUNY school with year-round dorming, life skills coaching, academic support, and more. The Dorm Project currently serves over 120 students at the John Jay College, City College, and Queens College dormitories, with a goal of dramatically increasing the rates of college and career success for youth in foster care.

The Dorm Project Tutor Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the academic supports offered at one of the Dorm Project dormitories, which include weekly individualized tutoring and advisement from tutors who are specifically trained to support students in foster care in college. Tutors act as both instructors and academic mentors to students in the program, helping them to bridge instructional gaps, build confidence in their ability to do college-level work, and develop long-term academic plans toward college graduation.

The Tutor Supervisor will directly support tutors and will report to and receive regular coaching from The Dorm Project’s Tutor Manager.

Job Description:

·       Leads a team of approximately 5 tutors who provide academic support for 30-60 students

·       Tutors a caseload of 6-8 students and supports them in a variety of collegiate coursework. Will develop a long-term mentoring relationship with their students and is expected to create a calm and accepting environment, and tailor the sessions to each student’s knowledge and needs.

·       Submits feedback after each meeting with a student, and analyzes the feedback of their supervisees; Lead group discussions with colleagues around identifying and troubleshooting specific student issues and developing new general methods for engaging students and teaching various types of content

·       Ensures that every tutor under their lead has the training and support needed to effectively work with students to achieve their academic goals

·       Works closely with Dorm Project Academic leadership to design and implement protocols and processes for Dorm Project academic support, including individualized tutoring and academic advising and tracking.

·       In collaboration with Dorm Project leadership, develops shared program practices and sets program goals and performance indicators.

Education and Requirements:

·       BA/BS degree is required; Masters degree in Education, Social Work or related field is preferred.

·       At least 1-year experience working with young adults in an academic setting and/ or demonstrated ability to provide outstanding instruction to youth in foster care strongly preferred

·       Proficient in or able to quickly learn a wide range of college-level academic subjects

·       Previous tutoring or teaching experience preferred

·       Previous supervisory experience in an academic or social-work setting is preferred

·       Compassionate and patient, and sensitive to the needs of our target population.

·       Capable of working in a group setting, and of giving and receiving critical feedback.

·       Detail oriented, responsible, and punctual.

·       Knowledge of the CUNY school system and its protocols as well as CUNY Support programs is preferred
