Essential Functions:

The Development Officer is responsible for the planning and management of raising funds, with a primary focus on corporations, through a broad range of fundraising activities including proposals, site visits, stewardship, reports, research, and other meaningful contact with donors and prospects. Given the growing impact of corporate ERGs (Employee Resource Groups), this position also manages our relationships with those entities within the framework of our corporate engagement.  These tasks include serving as the primary point-of-contact with ERGs, facilitating their participation in volunteer and other event programs, and ensuring the seamless transition of some of their individuals into donor relationships.  The Development Officer also will maintain their own portfolio of individual donors (mostly related to their corporate relationships), as well as assist with and guide some of our event projects, as appropriate.  This position is an integral member of the Development team and reports to the Chief Development Officer. 


Job Duties

Plan and organize development activities:

•Create, implement and evaluate the annual and multi-year plans to maintain and expand contributions from corporations (sponsorships, grants, etc.).

•Assist in setting fundraising goals and objectives; communicate progress towards goals.

•Collaborate with program staff to seek and develop ways to increase restricted and unrestricted revenue from corporations within a strategic framework.

•Monitor and support the ongoing maintenance of the corporate records in Raiser’s Edge to ensure accuracy and timeliness of communications and tracking; work closely with the Manager, Development Services and Operations to facilitate acknowledgements, invitations, recognition, etc.

•Write proposals, solicitation letters, acknowledgements and reports, ensuring that all deadlines are met.

•Participate in site visits, tours, and other personal contact with donors to steward contributions.

•Participate in implementation of cultivation events, special events and other development activities, as needed.

•Cultivate and engage new and existing volunteers to assist with development and agency projects.

•Engage a portfolio of individual donors, including cultivation, stewardship, gift ask and upgrades.

•Write and edit materials for a variety of donor communications vehicles (i.e., newsletter, annual report, website, etc.) as needed, and in collaboration with PR/Communications staff.

•Assume special projects or other activities as requested by the Chief Development Officer.

  

Staff/Manage development team:

•Assist the Chief Development Officer to recruit, interview and select well-qualified development staff.

•Assist in building an effective team that will work together collectively to broaden and strengthen the development department.

•Bridge the gap between the Chief Development Officer and the development team to create an effective communication model across the department.

•Create detailed reports for COH Board and Board Development Committee meetings

•As requested, report and communicate with CEO, Board members, department leads and other leaders of the organization


Public Relation Duties:

•Develop a comprehensive communication plan to promote the organization to the Chicago corporate community; maximize public awareness of the fundraising activities of the organization.

Other Duties:

•Support the work of volunteers and staff, including preparing donor and prospect profiles and briefings prior to meetings and/or site visits.

•Remain current on new programs and initiatives in the development profession through independent study and participation in workshops/conferences.

Skills/Qualifications

•Education: Bachelor’s degree.

•Experience: 3 to 5 years direct development/fundraising.  Preference is for efforts maintaining and growing a corporate philanthropy program.  Additional areas that would prove helpful are individual donor engagement, events participation and volunteer management.

o             Knowledge of fundraising methods and strategies.

o             Knowledge of local, state and national funding sources.

o             Knowledge of special events planning and management

o             Superior writing skills.

o             Self-starter, team player, project leader and quality manager.

o             Ability to adapt to and work effectively within a variety of situations.

o             Superior computer skills and knowledge including word processing, database operations, spreadsheets and on-line research tools proficiency in Raiser’s Edge, or similar fundraising CRM required.
