San Francisco Playhouse


San Francisco Playhouse is the second-largest nonprofit theatre company in San Francisco. Having grown from storefront to 199-seat theatre in just 15 years, we are powered by a team of energetic and innovative theatre lovers. Founded in 2003 as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit theatre company, our programming includes a six-play mainstage season and a three-play Sandbox Series of world premieres, plus a Rising Star Education Program for high school students. Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Shop Carpenter who will work regularly in our Hayward Scene Shop with the Technical Director and Assistant Technical Director to build sets and set pieces for all mainstage and sandbox productions. Additionally, this individual will assist with all set load-ins at our San Francisco venue. This position is ideal for an experienced set builder with regular availability. 


Status: Part-time, Non-Exempt

Reports to: Technical Director

Schedule: 40 hours per week


Responsibilities Include:

-         Assist with budgeting and project management based on Scenic design drawings for main stage productions

-         Assist in creating construction drawings based on Scenic design Drawings for main stage productions

-         Assist in sourcing and purchasing materials for main stage Productions

-         Assist in Construction of scenic elements for main stage productions including but not limited to :

o  General and finish carpentry

o  Welding and steel fabrication

o  Soft goods and drop repairs and alterations

o  Scenic painting where required

o  Electrical wirings and special effects

o  Theatrical rigging

-         Assist with the installation of San Francisco Playhouse Sandbox shows where schedule permits

-         Maintain main stage productions over the course of the performance runs

-         Maintain the backstage area of the theater, including the backstage tool kit – ensure all tools are returned to their proper place and that the storage cabinet is clean and well organized

-         Assist with the disposal of unwanted props and set pieces

-         Assist in the cleaning and organization of the prop and costume storage alcoves.

-         Assist in keeping the scene shop clean during and after production builds

-         Assist in the transportation of tools and scenic element between scene shop and theater

-         Help maintain the highest level of job safety

Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift 40lbs, be comfortable on a ladder, familiar with the safe operation of hand and power tools, able to stand for long periods of time and able to travel via stairs.

Must have reliable transportation to our Shop venue in Hayward.
