The Practice Space is a SF Bay Area non-profit organization that seeks to build confidence and community through public speaking coaching and communication skill development for people ages 8 to adult. Through our summer camps, organizational trainings, private coaching, and school-based programs, we envision communities where youth and adults feel powerful, cared for, and heard. For more about our mission, please visit our website:

We are looking for a Public Speaking Coach to join our growing organization on an hourly, project basis. The ideal candidate is passionate about youth voice, public speaking, teaching, and community engagement, with a background in youth development, after-school programming, or summer learning. You will work directly with young people in middle school, and/or high school grades to assist our after-school public speaking programs, known as Storytelling and Debate Clubs. Our Storytelling and Debate Clubs are offered to small groups of 10-20 students interested in becoming more confident speakers who can communicate their personal experiences, advocate for themselves and others, and debate important issues. Each Public Speaking Coach will lead and/or co-teach 90-minute team practice sessions on a weekly basis at different school sites during the academic year. Public speaking activities include storytelling, debate, informative and persuasive speeches in preparation for tournaments and showcases. Extensive professional development is provided to each Public Speaking Coach prior to starting at a school site. The goal is to help students find their voice and feel more confident on a safe, fun, team and through our Expression-Driven Teaching methods.

While coaches are provided with training, the ideal candidate has a strong background in education, teaching, coaching, and/or youth development. Even more than previous experience as a public speaking coach, we are looking for candidates who can empathize and relate to our students’ struggles, who may have struggled with public speaking themselves, and who personally know how valuable public speaking experience can be for students. It is important for all coaches to be dependable, trustworthy, and able to see the potential in all young speakers, as opposed to focusing primarily on deficits. Our after-school programs are located in West Contra Costa, so as an ideal candidate, you have a passion for urban public education, ready to bring positive energy and creativity as a team leader. You genuinely enjoy working with youth and have experience working in out-of-school programs as a tutor, camp counselor, after-school program lead, or extracurricular coach.

  • Co-teach and/or lead 90-minute team practice sessions on public speaking, online and/or in person (depending on the school site)

  • 2+ years of experience as a mentor, coach, tutor, summer camp counselor, or teacher
  • Passion for public speaking
  • Ability to work in school districts on campus with students (i.e. can pass fingerprinting clearance, background checks, school/district COVID requirements, and TB tests)
  • Spanish language ability strongly preferred
  • Background in Education, Youth Development, Performing Arts, or a related field preferred
