Description

Mothers Out Front is seeking a talented organizer and staff manager to develop and implement our Frontline Fellowship Program. Your role as Frontline Communities Fellowship Manager will be to work collaboratively with staff and member leadership to craft our fellowship program to expand our organizing into frontline communities that are experiencing the worst effects of fossil fuels — from the dangers and challenges caused by extreme weather patterns to devastating health effects like asthma and other respiratory illnesses — with particular attention to low-income communities and communities of color.

Initially, we will be organizing in the communities will be in the states where we already operate: NY, MA, VA, CA.

Mothers Out Front believes that the most effective community organizers will be mothers who live in frontline communities and have history there, with deep local roots and relationships, trusted by their peers, and expertise on their communities’ strengths and challenges. The program will recruit mothers as paid organizing fellows, working to mobilize other mothers in their community around climate issues that concern them, while at the same time accessing training and leadership development support through Mothers Out Front as part of a cohort of other fellows. Fellows will receive training in effective community organizing methods while being connected with the resources of a national organization, and the women we engage as frontline fellows bring a deep understanding of how their own community ticks and what will be effective there.

About Mothers Out Front:

Mothers Out Front builds our power as mothers to ensure a livable climate for all children. We are building a diverse national movement of mothers, grandmothers, and caregivers dedicated to convincing elected officials and business leaders to work for a swift, complete, and just transition away from fossil fuels to clean and renewable energy. We know that mothers have an important role to play in the climate change movement, and, when it comes to protecting their children, mothers are an unstoppable force for change! Our goal is simple: to enable mothers to take active leadership in climate change work by providing the structure, training, and tools for them to work together on campaigns in their communities and at the statewide level. We are a member-led, national organization that is growing quickly. Founded in 2013, this year’s operating budget is $3.7m. We currently have staff working in eight states and are a fast growing organization with no plans of slowing down.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Bring together member and staff leadership to refine the vision for this program.
  • Working in collaboration with members and staff, develop all components of a successful fellowship including training curriculum, coaching model, recruitment plan, and more.
  • Successfully recruit and launch the first cohort of fellows in the first half of 2019 to be placed in four states, including creating job descriptions, driving the interview process, and making hiring decisions.
  • Design a training program for the program.
  • Supervise and support the fellows during their fellowship.
  • Plan and oversee regular cohort meetings, trainings, and the strategic campaigns on the ground.
  • Participate in sharing and integrating the learnings from this program into the work across Mothers Out Front through reporting and data analysis.
  • Play a lead role in raising the voices of frontline communities into the larger climate conversation, including collaborating on national Mothers Out Front events.
  • Lead, in partnership with our development team, the cultivation and procurement of sustainable funding for the program.
  • Manage the program’s budget in partnership with national leadership.
  • Play an active role in the organization’s organizing management team to ensure collective impact and growth goals are set and achieved.

  • Experience and comfort with fundraising.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to working with people from a variety of backgrounds, especially ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds. It’s also helpful if you have experience working with people from different religious, education, generational, and gender identity backgrounds as well as those with physical disabilities and from the LGBTQ community.
