Agency Description: Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Los Angeles is the nation’s largest Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) legal and civil rights organization and serves more than 15,000 individuals and organizations every year. Founded in 1983 as the Asian Pacific American Legal Center, Advancing Justice - LA’s mission is to advocate for civil rights, provide legal services and education, and build coalitions to positively influence and impact Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and to create a more equitable and harmonious society. Through direct legal services, impact litigation, policy analysis and advocacy, leadership development and capacity building, Advancing Justice - LA seeks to serve the most vulnerable members of the AANHPI community while also building a strong AANHPI voice for civil rights and social justice.

Position Summary: The Controller oversees Advancing Justice’s accounts, ledges, and reporting systems to help bring the Agency up to regulatory standards and ensure compliance. This position is also responsible for coordinating all aspects of the annual financial audit and budgeting process, which may include working cross-functionally with program directors, management, and other agencies. The Controller also analyzes and presents financial data to Advancing Justice’s leadership team to help drive decisions organization wide. This position works with a team of accountants to produce reports, manage accounts payables and accounts receivables, properly allocate Grants that are awarded to the Agency, and manage the organization’s cash flow. The Controller also supervises a team of accountants at different levels and provides end-of-year performance feedback.    

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements
  • Coordinate all audit activities
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of Advancing Justice’s financial status
  • Assist Advancing Justice’s leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting material for government corporate and foundation grants
  • Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with the program vice presidents; continually collaborate with program vice presidents to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations
  • Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines
  • Directly supervise accounting personnel and provide career development opportunities, year-end performance reviews, and salary change recommendations
  •  Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment
  • Other Duties as Assigned

Qualifications:

Education and Work Experience

  • BA; CPA and/or MBA preferred
  • Minimum of 10 years of accounting experience with at least 5 years of supervisory experience
  • Minimum of 3 years in the non-profit sector


Other Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of economic and accounting principles and practices
  • Thorough knowledge and expertise in using Quickbooks to be able to lead and train others preferred
  • Expert knowledge in the various Microsoft Office suite products
  • Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board or other outside partners
  • Keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation versus. simple reporting
  • A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants is essential
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment
