We now need a results-driven Director of Communications to join our fast-paced Public Affairs team.

Key responsibilities include:

-Develop and implement effective media and public relations strategies to advance our mission, ensuring strong positive messaging is conveyed internally and externally;

-Write effective press releases, advisories, talking points, speeches, and related presentations;

-Maintain strong, professional relationships with reporters, bloggers, TV bookers and producers, columnists, editorial staff and communications staff for allied organizations;

-Manage a small team of associates to produce strong content and disciplined messaging;

-Regularly pitch a variety of stories to national and local media outlets;

-Respond to daily media requests and serve as media liaison;

-Become knowledgeable in all aspects of Success Academy school design and mission, as well as current legislative and non-legislative issues affecting Success Academy and ed reform;

-Develop strong internal relationships with school staff, curriculum experts, department heads, parents, etc. to produce/pitch relevant stories; and

-Work a flexible schedule that will at times include long hours, nights and weekends.

Our ideal Director of Communications has 3 to 5 years of experience in a variety of communications positions or related roles. A commitment to improving public education and ensuring all students have access to a high quality school, a can-do attitude, high standard for excellence, sophisticated writing style, and good sense of humor are critical. S/he must be flexible and comfortable in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment. 

A successful candidate will also possess the following characteristics and experiences:

-Excellent writing and presentation skills;

-Strong analytical and organization skills, ability to meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks, resourceful and attentive to detail and accuracy;

-Excellent judgment, especially in difficult and fast-moving environments; and

-Knowledge of and experience working in New York City media.
