Position Summary


Advancement Project California is seeking an experienced and accomplished candidate for the role of Manager, Research and Data Analysis (“Manager”). The ideal candidate should have at least five years of nonprofit, philanthropic or governmental experience focused on key social and racial justice issues. The Manager will report to the Director of Research and Data Analysis and is responsible for managing and conducting research and data analysis for a variety of organizational projects and initiatives, as well as for community-based, government and foundation initiatives. The Manager will supervise two staff.


 


The successful candidate must have a strong, demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice, documented project management skills, a track record of overseeing multiple streams of work and at the same and be comfortable working in a fast-paced and changing landscape of priorities and responsibilities. A strong attention to detail, and the ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines are required.


 


Specific Responsibilities include, but are not limited to Team Development/Management 


  • In coordination with the Director, supervise and coordinate research activities for Research & Data Analysis staff.
  • Manage an appropriate team to promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
  • Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis.
  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign duties, set objectives, establish priorities, and conduct performance reviews.


Research & Data Analysis


  • Conduct research and data analysis for Advancement Project California program areas, strategic initiatives, and partners.
  • Coordinate with staff and external partners to design and deploy the most effective research and data analysis to move policy for more equitable outcomes. 
  • Communicate findings – through written reports, visualizations, and presentations – so they are clear and impactful for policymakers and the lay person alike. 
  • Participate in organization-wide planning, development, and communication activities, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned, dependent on organizational needs and employee skills.

  • Qualifications:

  • Sincere and demonstrated commitment to advancing social and/or racial justice progress for the highest-need communities.
  • A minimum of five years of experience as a researcher in a related field and a demonstrated record of producing successful reports for a variety of audiences. Experience must include the application of quantitative methods and qualitative methods. Experience with community-based research is desired. 
  • Bachelor’s degree required, graduate degree preferred, in public policy, the social sciences, or relevant field. Competency in statistics is required. Equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential job duties may be considered.
  • Two years of experience managing research and supervising other researchers.
  • Two years of experience working with geographic data, geographic information systems, and geographic databases in a professional setting. Competency in SQL required. Experience working with PostgreSQL and PostGIS software desired. 
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, facilitation and presentation skills, including experience translating technical analyses into compelling advocacy messages.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new research methods and software. 
  • In-depth knowledge of California public datasets highly desired.
  • A high degree of diplomacy, professionalism, sensitivity, and respect for the confidentiality of certain data and projects are required.
  • Demonstrated track record of successful project management. 
  • Demonstrated leadership and vision in managing staff.
  • Proven ability to work with diverse communities, leaders and staff.  
  • A strong attention to detail is required.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to take on responsibilities independently with only general supervision. 
  • Ability to multi-task under deadlines and work well under pressure. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a small team setting.
  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Must be able to travel locally and statewide.
