  • Student Advising: In person and over text, we support students one-on-one to maximize financial aid, minimize loan debt, and make informed financial decisions about the best post-secondary option for them.
  • Training: Online and in-person we provide professional development for school counselors and college access providers, sharing our expertise so they can effectively support their students.
  • Policy & Systems Change: To level the playing field for young people from all economic backgrounds, we work to improve financial aid systems so everyone has a chance to graduate with a degree they can afford.

Position Summary: uAspire College Affordability Advisors support a cohort of students using our innovative text-messaging platform combined with in-person advising. Our direct service programming provides advising to students in both the Bay Area of California as well as sites across Massachusetts for students in 11th grade through 2nd year of college. College Affordability Advisors will receive in-depth college affordability training in order to successfully support students on their path to and through a postsecondary education.

This position requires a highly motivated individual with a passion for supporting youth, a commitment to continuous learning about navigating the college access and success process, someone who is comfortable working independently, and who enjoys leveraging data and technology to support student success will be a strong fit in this role. The successful applicant will be someone who is excited about making a real impact on the lives of young people, strives to put learning into action, and thrives on new challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

College Affordability Advising

  • Provide advising based on uAspire’s college affordability curriculum to a cohort of young people navigating their postsecondary pathways
  • Work with students on completion of uAspire student outcomes (financial aid completion, financially informed college choices, increased knowledge and empowerment in process of financial aid experience)
  • Assist students in completing state, federal, and institutional financial aid forms
  • Advocate for and coach students to engage with relevant individuals, offices, and resources to support their individual needs
  • Develop and implement creative approaches to drive student engagement with program text messages and in-person advising
  • Identify and maximize opportunities to engage students via other tech and communication means
  • Serve as relationship manager with key partners (school, college, community) including regular sharing of successes and challenges, sharing data, and working collaboratively for student success

Program Support and Collaboration

  • Collaborate on school, office-based and/or community-based events, some of which require evening or weekend hours on occasion
  • Maintain positive and collaborative working relationships with colleagues
  • Support other departments with needs as requested. For example, support with adding examples for trainings, provide student stories for development and marketing, attending conferences and events

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain detailed records in uAspire’s Salesforce database to track contact with students/families and their progress toward completing key affordability tasks ? Regularly review advisor performance data to monitor own progress to goals. Pull and utilize pertinent Salesforce student data reports to inform outreach to students

  • Organization and Project Management Skills- self-starter with ability to plan and implement projects independently
  • Comfort with Utilizing and Adapting to New Technologies- able to utilize and adapt new and existing technology to meet student needs, including a high proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite software
  • Enthusiasm for Advising Students- Students are at the core of all the work we do at uAspire. We are seeking applicants who are excited to work with students both virtually (via text) and in-person
  • Comfort with Change- understands change is necessary to evolve as a person and as an organization, is able to quickly and methodically adjust priorities and is able to suggest changes to improve the organization as a whole
  • Creative Problem-Solving- doesn’t get intimidated by complex or sizable undertakings; attacks challenges with energy and enthusiasm and is self motivated to accomplish great things as an individual and as part of a team even in high pressure situations
  • Knowledge of Barriers Faced by Low Income, First Generation, Students of Color- Experience working with and motivating diverse high school and/or college-aged populations from underrepresented communities
  • Embodiment of uAspire’s core values- being student-centered, excellent, dedicated, collaborative, and systems-focused, and committed to contributing to efforts to ensure a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment
  • Postsecondary Degree or Equivalent Professional Experience- Some college-going experience is required; degree attainment is optional

Nice to Have (but not required):

  • 1-2 years of experience in college access, higher education, and/or educational non-profit
  • Experience with online, app, or text-based communications- especially for purposes of two-way communications and program delivery
  • Experience working with and motivating diverse high school and/or college-aged students in underrepresented communities
  • Knowledge of local community and regional higher education system

Work Hours/ Schedule: uAspire College Affordability Advisors work- year round. During the school year advisors work a 7 hour day between the hours of 8am-3:30pm with occasional evening and weekend hours due to school-based events. During school vacations and the summer work hours are from 9am-5pm. The advisor will have to occasionally travel to our Boston office for training and other professional development sessions.

Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience and education. All full-time employees receive a competitive benefits package.
