OneAmerica is a Seattle-based nonprofit whose mission is to advance the fundamental principles of democracy and justice by building power within immigrant communities. OneAmerica was established in 2001 by U.S. Representative Pramila Jayapal and has since grown to become a locally and nationally recognized leader in advancing immigrant, civil, and human rights. Our strategies include policy advocacy, grassroots organizing, immigrant integration programs and civic/electoral engagement. OneAmerica is looking for an experienced organizer and movement builder that is enthusiastic about leading work with parents and grassroots leaders in south King County to impact change particularly in the education system. This full-time position focuses on community organizing and coordination in South King County, with a particular emphasis on developing cross-cultural alliances to build power. Reporting directly to the Senior Organizing Manager, the Lead Organizer will be responsible for driving key campaigns in South King County focused on our immigrant rights and education equity and building a powerful base of grassroots leaders in the region to drive systemic change. This is a huge opportunity to work at the intersection of immigrant rights and education equity and support a dynamic, community driven approach to systemic change.
Grassroots Organizing and Leadership Development - 60%
● Manage existing base of parent leaders in key geographic areas in South King County supporting them to develop leadership skills and run local campaigns as well as eventually run for elected positions
● Identify and recruit a core group of new grassroots leaders in South King County
● Develop and implement leadership development and advocacy trainings tailored to diverse immigrant and refugee communities
● Manage monthly base group meetings and track and implement base building and leadership develop goals with a focus on cross-racial organizing
● Design and implement a strategy to advocate at school board meetings in South King County
● Design and support a parent organizing strategy as part of OneAmerica’s adult English language programming
- Educate voters, run voter registration canvasses, and coordinate leaders and volunteers around civic engagement and electoral activities
- Mobilize community members and coalition partners to attend target events
Coalition Building 10%
- Work with community partners to build systems-level change at local and state levels, including developing strategies, engaging in dialogue, and planning meetings, events, rallies, forums, etc.
- Work closely with the Road Map Project and other organizations in South King County to drive organizing strategy in education system
- Represent OneAmerica at meetings, forums and public speaking engagements
Staff Management 20%
- Provide weekly supervision to youth organizer and organizing interns
- Work collaboratively with other teams to drive goals
- Report on grants and contracts
- Track data using salesforce
- Compliance reporting during election season
We’re seeking candidates who excel in movement-building, are results-oriented, and have strong project and people management skills. While no one candidate will embody all of the qualifications below we are looking for:
· Minimum of two years of experience in community, labor, or electoral organizing, with particular emphasis on organizing within diverse immigrant and refugee communities
· Minimum of one year of experience in a supervisory role or commensurate experience
· Experience overseeing contracts and budgets
· Passion for education equity and closing the opportunity gap, and commitment to fighting for social, racial, and economic justice
· Ability to think strategically and experience planning programs and executing campaigns
· Strong analysis of power with demonstrated experience building cross racial movements
- A track record of advancing racial equity outcomes and ability to work effectively with communities of color in organizing settings
· Background leading campaigns focused on grassroots organizing preferably in an education setting
· Strong verbal, listening, and written communications skills
· Excellent group facilitation and coalition-building skills, and an ability to develop effective relationships with diverse allies and constituents
· Ability to thrive within a fast-paced environment while maintaining effective time management and organization methods
· Experience developing leadership curriculum and implementing trainings
· Previous experience as a manager preferred
· Willingness to travel and accommodate community-based scheduling needs such as evening and weekend meetings
· Access to a reliable vehicle and a Washington State driver’s license required
· Experience with basic computer programs, including Outlook and Microsoft Office Suite (database experience also a plus)
· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred but not required
· Bilingual skills preferred
