Position Overview

Birthright AFRICA is seeking a full-time experienced Development Director to join our collaborative team that is passionate about the mission. A new position in the organization, the Development Director will have the opportunity to continue building the development function and work closely with the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Board on fundraising strategy to fulfill the 5 year organizational goal to sponsor 5,000 Scholars over 5 years within Birthright AFRICA’s collaborative partnership model. As a start-up non-profit, this individual plays a key role in furthering the mission of the organization. They will provide results-driven leadership, strategic direction as well as management of capital campaigns, special events like the gala, mid-year and end of year appeals as part of coordination for all fundraising efforts. This position will raise awareness and funds from key stakeholders including current donors, partners, brand ambassadors and alumni while building a pipeline of new donors including high influence and high net worth individuals. The Development Director will establish a culture of philanthropy across the organization and cement Birthright AFRICA as the umbrella organization driving awareness and funding that fulfills the commitment of providing youth and young adults of African descent ages 13 - 30 in the U.S. and global diaspora their birthright to Africa.


Responsibilities:

Development Strategy, Planning, and Execution:

  • Develop and execute Birthright AFRICA’s annual fundraising plan.
  • Develop annual revenue goals, fundraising calendar and plan to diversify and increase organizational budget through a comprehensive development strategy to secure financial support from corporate, foundation, government and individual donors.
  • Spearhead and execute annual campaigns, mid-year and end of year appeals.
  • Oversee organization and execution of special events, including annual gala.
  • Develop and track proposals and reports for all foundation and corporate fundraising.
  • Research new technologies and techniques to maximize on fundraising strategy.

Donor and Prospect Engagement:

  • Oversee all donor and prospect engagement efforts including mid-level and major donors in collaboration with CEO, Executive Board, Staff and Volunteers, etc.
  • Establish and execute calendar of donor engagement activities and events (i.e. quarterly exclusive dinners) to build ongoing relationships with major donors.
  • Maintain complete records and interactions via Network For Good to manage portfolio of donors and prospects.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Business Administration, African Studies or related field (required), Master’s degree (a plus).
  • 7+ years of experience in Development (required), experience with African diaspora related mission preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience and results supporting a start-up non-profit with fundraising growth strategy and execution of 5 year strategic plan.
  • Experience in budget development, grant writing, administration, and staff management.
  • Comfortable in start-up environments requiring resilience and ingenuity.
  • Passion for African and diaspora culture, heritage, and innovation required.
  • Travel experience in Africa highly preferred.
  • Eagerness to learn, grow, and stay on top of trends in philanthropy.
  • Strong organizational, collaborative, process management and interpersonal skills.
  • Technology aptitude with donor databases like Network For Good, Google Suite applications and software i.e. Google Drive, Microsoft Office, etc.

This is a hybrid position in New York City with option to work remotely 2-3 days a week reporting directly to the CEO of Birthright AFRICA.
