Vice President, Marketing and Communications

UnboundEd is dedicated to ensuring that education systems disrupt systemic racism by providing students of color meaningful, engaging, and affirming grade-level instruction. We are a team of former classroom teachers, curriculum writers, and school and program leaders dedicated to empowering educators to meet the challenges set by higher standards, unfinished instruction, and institutional racism. We provide immersive instructional equity professional development, free high-quality standards-aligned resources for the classroom, and other professional learning opportunities for teachers, coaches, and leaders. We thrive in working collaboratively and work to dismantle white supremacist structures within our own organization and within the education system.


Reporting to the Deputy Chief, Strategic Growth and Partnerships, the Vice President, Marketing and Communications (VP) at UnboundEd is a new position in this growing arm of the organization. The VP will work in close alignment with their peers in leading communications, PR, branding, marketing, and advertising. This position will also be responsible for overseeing the related data analytics and reporting.

UnboundEd is a virtual organization and this employee can be based anywhere in the United States. UnboundEd has core business hours where we expect all staff to be available from 10 am to 6 pm ET and occasional travel is required.


Essential responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

Communications, Public Relations, Branding, and Brand Awareness

  • Drive the overall brand awareness and positive perception of UnboundEd, our mission, our CEO, and other organizational leaders
  • Develop and implement an integrated communications and PR plan to advance UnboundEd’s brand awareness, broaden and increase the visibility of the organization, programs, and leaders, and build a strong public voice; including traditional print and digital and social media
  • Develop relationships with national journalists and media professionals
  • Establish and maintain UnboundEd’s advisory board as part of a thought leadership and advocacy strategy
  • Lead and oversee the organization’s website development (design and content), search engine optimization (SEO) strategies and tactics, online and social media initiatives with oversight to monitor and share analytics and usage
  • Establish metrics, data capture, and reporting systems and routines to continually track brand awareness and positive perception of UnboundEd and its staff
  • Lead development of content in collaboration with program leadership including blog, podcasts, and other content pieces
  • Direct the strategic and creative design and development of UnboundEd’s brand by leading branding of new programs and resources and refreshing existing programs; collaborates with program and legal teams to ensure UnboundEd’s intellectual property is appropriately protected with trademarks and/or copyrights and other related licensing

Marketing and Advertising

  • Direct all aspects of the UnboundEd marketing strategy; including integrated marketing campaigns to meet attendance and revenue targets
  • Lead all promotions including content marketing, advertising, search, influencer relations, and social media to generate qualified leads for sales and partnerships
  • Develop collateral materials and other advertising assets including email campaigns and sponsorship opportunities
  • Inform new program development in collaboration with program team based on expressed customer and participant demands and needs; collaborate with finance to develop pricing schedule and discounts
  • Establish metrics, data capture methods and reporting systems and routines to continually track advertising ROI and recommend upgrades
  • Responsible for managing program registration, reporting systems and routines, and ensuring appropriate systems and procedures are in place so that participants have a satisfactory experience registering for UE programs

Market Research

  • Conduct ongoing research in order to deeply understand the conditions, motivations and needs of UnboundEd’s current customers and participants and proactively shares internally to inform program design and development
  • Monitor state and national policy developments and changing conditions within which UnboundEd works
  • Conduct relevant market research as needed on new initiatives

Planning and Budgeting

  • Responsible for the achievement of marketing and communications goals and financial objectives. Ensures that the evaluation systems, including benchmarks, are in place related to these goals and objectives and reports progress to the Deputy Chief, Strategic Growth and Partnerships
  • Develop short and long-term plans and budgets for the marketing and communications program and its activities; monitors progress and evaluates performance


  • Build team culture of continuous learning and growth; Ensure communications, marketing, and operational teams collaborate and drive decisions informed by reliable market-tested data
  • Lead and manage team to ensure fulfillment of organizational goals and objectives
  • Provide ongoing feedback to team members in order to advance their professional development; seek other opportunities to develop staff



  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in marketing, communications, business, or a related field with seven (7) years of progressive leadership experience in marketing, communications, and effectively managing teams; Advanced degree preferred
  • Other equivalent combinations of relevant experience and training will also be considered

  • In-depth knowledge of K-12 school environments, curriculum and PD purchasing patterns, and K-12 state and federal policy
  • An experienced professional with demonstrated success leading a marketing and communications team
  • Proven success at developing and implementing digital marketing and social media strategies, and understanding of SEO strategies to enhance brand awareness, visibility, and engagement
  • Experience developing, implementing, and analyzing social media metrics
  • Demonstrated ability to use data and related systems to inform communications and marketing strategy and continuous improvement
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a virtual, remote environment and build strong relationships with colleagues and partners across geographies and time zones
  • Willingness to work alongside a dynamic, highly collaborative, and mission-driven team
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and ability to thrive in a fast-paced and changing environment
  • Proficient use of Google-based applications, Zoom, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Google Analytics and other web metrics, Slack, and knowledge of effectively utilizing a CRM.
  • A strong communicator, written and verbal, who is able to interface with a variety of audiences, both internal and external


UnboundEd offers competitive salaries commensurate with experience and education, and a generous benefits package that includes take-as-you-need vacation and sick time, group medical, dental and vision plans, disability and life insurance plans, and an employer-sponsored 401K retirement plan with an annual 3% match. This is an exempt full-time position with an annual salary range of $130,000 - $195,000.
