MANAGING DIRECTOR, DIRECT RESPONSE AND MARKETING

The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking highly-qualified applicants for the position of Managing Director of Direct Response and Marketing, to be responsible for strategic marketing in service of fundraising. The position manages a robust direct response program, including direct mail and digital fundraising, as well as creative, multimedia, and events functions. The Managing Director of Direct Response and Marketing reports to the Deputy Director of Development and Outreach and oversees a team of 13 staff in addition to external consultants. The successful candidate will preferably be based in New York, but other locations are considered. 


Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are currently closed or operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely initially or if local requirements mandate it. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.


Responsibilities:


The Managing Director's responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:


Direct response fundraising

1. Providing vision, leadership, and strategy for the Direct Mail and Digital fundraising teams as they build for sustainable growth across the digital and direct mail spectrum;

2. Supporting Digital fundraising’s expansion efforts into international markets;

3. Collaborating with our direct mail and digital fundraising consultants and other vendors in the planning, development, execution, expansion, and evaluation of all integrated direct response campaigns;

4. Exploring innovative ways to maximize the income potential of present and lapsed donors, evaluate future acquisition strategies and donor upgrade programs, and identify new technologies and tools to maximize touchpoints along donor journeys;

5. Collaborating with internal teams (Program, Communications, Digital Advocacy, Planned Giving) on donor pipeline development and integrated mail and digital strategies for fundraising campaigns across programs;

6. Directing high-level marketing and membership programs aimed at deepening donor loyalty through customized benefits and experiences;


Marketing in service of fundraising

1. Supervising Development’s Multimedia and Creative teams in their production of broad-based donor-facing communications that align HRW’s key messages with fundraising objectives and reach existing and new constituents, including collateral such as videos, interactive web features, photo essays, annual reports, annual dinner materials, and brochures; 

2. Overseeing the creation of higher-touch engagement tools, both printed and digital, in support of donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship by frontline, major gift staff;

3. Partnering with and supporting Communications staff and other key colleagues on branding for the organization;


Events in service of fundraising

1. Supervising the Events teams in their partnership with frontline fundraising staff and execution of fundraising and outreach events, including annual dinners, film festivals, the Council Summit, among others; and  

2. Fostering innovation of existing in-person and virtual events and overseeing the successful implementation of such across a global fundraising staff and donor network.


Qualifications: 


Education: A bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, business management, or other related field, or equivalent work experience, is required. 


Experience: A minimum of 12 years of direct response, marketing, or fundraising experience is required. At least 7 years of management experience is required.


Skills and Abilities:


1. A proven track record of developing comprehensive marketing strategies that have consistently met or exceeded planned objectives, ideally for fundraising;

2. Experience in building direct response fundraising program is strongly preferred;

3. Familiarity with creative/visual marketing strategy; 

4. Excellent analytical skills, with great attention to detail;

5. Experience directly managing teams and working cross functionally in an international, multicultural organization;

6. Experience in building team culture, collaboration, practices, and performance; 

7. Strong influencing skills, including the ability to lead diverse teams to achieve agreed goals and to drive change without direct authority;

8. Excellent negotiation, communication, and presentation skills;

9. The ability to manage multiple priorities and multiple constituencies simultaneously, working effectively toward deadlines; and

10. A deep commitment to the mission of HRW.
