Opportunity: Pre-College Success Manager with TeenSHARP

The Organization

At a Glance: TeenSHARP is a college access and leadership development nonprofit founded in 2009. We prepare Black, Latino, and low-income students to attend, thrive at, and graduate (with little or no debt) from America’s most selective colleges. This fall, our graduates are headed to schools such as: Princeton, UPenn, MIT, Macalester, Pomona, Howard University, University of Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, and many more. Six SHARPies are headed to Cornell University, in a year when the school accepted just 8.7 percent of record-high applicants. From humble, church-basement beginnings, TeenSHARP has emerged as a tremendous force in the Delaware Valley region (including Camden, N.J.; and Philadelphia) for empowering students to fulfill their potential, and go beyond their wildest dreams.

Our Approach: At TeenSHARP we believe that students are capable of so much more than schools typically ask of them. We hold high academic and leadership standards for all scholars and employ a “Whatever It Takes” approach to ensure they have a robust support system to achieve their goals. Each member of our team develops scholars through timely, candid feedback, introducing opportunities to gain top leadership and professional experiences, and providing strategic academic advising and coaching.

The Role

The Pre-College Success Manager holds the primary responsibility for working with TeenSHARP scholars towards becoming strong candidates for top colleges in the short-term, and top careers in the long term. This role serves as a main strategist in helping students access necessary resources inside and outside of schools, and ensuring that students meet the standards of absolute excellence.

  • Communication: maintaining a consistent communication flow with all students and their parents to ensure goal progression
  • Team management: managing the flow of coaching inputs to make sure those align with strategies outlined for students
  • Training and facilitation: delivering workshops for students and parents and facilitating small group advising sessions
  • Relationship-building: developing deep and supportive relationships with students and families
  • Student advocacy: interfacing with schools and districts to advocate for student needs (e.g. access to more rigorous courses) and opportunities

You advocate for them like they're your own family and are a consistent presence in their support network.
  • You know where your advisees stand academically and in relation to TeenSHARP’s Five Guiding Behaviors and you’ve helped them grow in these areas over the program year.
  • You’ve helped all of your advisees apply for premier extracurricular opportunities and many have secured prestigious opportunities that will prepare them for leadership and college.
