The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a more effective and humane justice system by performing original research and helping launch reforms around the world. The Center creates operating projects that have been documented to improve public safety and reduce the use of jail and prison. Nationally and internationally, the Center performs original research on topics of justice reform and provides consulting services to criminal justice innovators.
The Crown Heights Community Mediation Center is a demonstration project of the Center for Court Innovation. Operating out of four storefronts in Central Brooklyn, the Crown Heights Community Mediation Center provides anti-violence programs, youth programs and resource links to community residents. Its mission is to encourage communication and understanding, prevent future conflicts, and help foster stronger, healthier neighborhoods.
The Mediation Center is seeking a full-time Violence Interrupter Supervisor (VIS) for the Save Our Streets (S.O.S.) Crown Heights program who will report to the Program Manager. S.O.S. Crown Heights is a replication of the Cure Violence program, a gun violence prevention model that aims to reduce and prevent shootings through the use of public health strategies. Violence Interrupters (VI’s) concentrate on detecting conflicts and working with the rest of the S.O.S. team to mediate and diffuse them.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
· Collaborate with the Outreach Worker Supervisor (OWS) to coordinate the daily plan for the Outreach Team which is comprised of Violence Interrupters (part-time staff) and Outreach Workers (full-time staff);
· Collaborate with OWS to lead S.O.S Crown Heights weekly meetings and report on activities of the Violence Interrupters;
· Coordinate staff schedule in response to speaking or workshop request for a Violence Interrupter;
· Prepare staff for requests from researchers, press, and elected officials;
· Engage with initiatives such as domestic violence awareness month, anti-bullying campaigns, mental health and wellness awareness;
· Represent and speak at S.O.S. Crown Heights at events within and outside the catchment area;
· Mobilize Violence Interrupters to respond to shootings within the catchment, as well as high profile shooting outside of the catchment;
· Represent the S.O.S. team interests at internal and external meetings;
· Plan, coordinate, and implement logistics for S.O.S. programming;
· Monitor Violence Interrupters’ high risk referrals;
· Assist with coordination of S.O.S Brooklyn collective canvassing in the catchment areas to raise awareness of the work that S.O.S. is doing;
· Identify “hot spots,” or places where act(s) of violence have taken place in the catchment area, and work with the S.O.S. team to create a plan to “cool” the area by consistently working with people there, hosting events, having a presence on the block, etc;
· Attend Arts to End Violence Workshops at local partner high schools, or coordinating attendance of another staff member;
· Assist with overall coordination of the Crown Heights S.O.S. team.
· Assist with transportation of team and participants using the S.O.S. van.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will be able to show they have the knowledge and connections to neighborhood necessary to be effective and complement the rest of the S.O.S. Crown Heights team. Candidate must be skilled communicator able to work in multi-disciplinary setting and maintain strong relationships with multiple agencies and organizations both onsite and in the community. Supervisory and criminal justice experience preferred.
