Job purpose


Education and Community Engagement (ECE) has been a pillar of Orchestra of St. Luke’s mission throughout its 43-year  history.


The Director of Education & Community Engagement is the member of Senior Management accountable for the planning, implementation, and outcomes of four core programs:


  1. Free School Concerts (two original orchestral programs annually)
  2. Free Borough Concerts (one original chamber music program annually)
  3. Youth Orchestra of St. Luke’s (El Sistema-inspired afterschool instrumental and ensemble instruction program at five sites in Hell’s Kitchen.)
  4. Pre-professional Mentorship Program and Young Artist Series. (In conjunction with[DW1]  local conservatories.)


Additionally, the Director will take advantage of the Orchestra’s flexible, entrepreneurial business model to develop new lines of business that sustainably support and expand delivery of the Orchestra’s mission in line with organizational strategy. These include, but are not limited to:


-         ECE chamber music run-outs

-         Sale/lease of original ECE programming to third parties

-         Expansion of programs through partnerships


Duties and responsibilities:


  • Plans and produces the annual core ECE programs in coordination with other departments and according to organization’s resources and overall strategy. Acts as public face of these programs to participants and funders. Is accountable for attendance goals.
  • Manages the afterschool Youth Orchestra of St. Luke’s (YOSL) according to the highest educational standards and within budget. Oversees YOSL staff and faculty. Maintains excellent relationships with school partners. Works with Development to maintain funding for these programs.
  • Develops the signature “Music in Color” series, which is currently a component of the Free School Concerts and Free Borough Concerts and slated to be licensed and marketed to third-parties.
  • Manages ECE human and financial resources to achieve departmental goals in alignment with organizational strategy.
  • Undertake program development reflective of current best practices in music education.
  • Develop relationships with neighborhood and borough community partners to deepen the impact of ECE programs and heighten the Orchestras’ recognition in the city.
  • Represents Orchestra of St. Luke’s to arts, education, and other relevant professional organizations.
  • Cultivates relationships with artistic partners that will strengthen the mission and business of the Orchestra.
  • Supervises the FT Manager of Youth Programs, PT Teaching Faculty, and the remaining partial year of PT Fellows funded by NYSCA.
  • Staffs the Education Committee, which is chaired by a board member and composed of board, staff, musicians, educators, and community leaders.
  • Additional duties as assigned.


Qualifications:


  • A minimum of five years of experience in arts education, with a track record of success.
  • Established expertise with arts education issues and best practices as they pertain to music, including:

o  curriculum development

o  use and training of teaching or performing artists

o  family and community involvement in educational

programs

o  use of technology in the service of education

o  working directly with schools

  • Experience managing staff and budget
  • Excellent public speaking skills
  • Entrepreneurial skills, with a drive to use business practices to underpin mission
  • Expertise in compliance issues related to music education
  • Experience working with musicians and concert production
  • Experience with NYC Department of Education
  • Available some nights and weekends
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills


Working conditions


  • Required to visit school sites, which may be in walking or driving distance. 
  • Ability to carry instruments between sites.
  • On some occasions, it may be necessary for the Director of Education and Community to participate in program activities in support of the teaching artist staff, which may include: playing an instrument, assisting with student coachings, leading music games, etc.
  • Open office environment.
