Position Description

Center for Policing Equity is looking for an attorney with strong policy analysis skills to serve as a Policy Associate for the Data Driven Interventions (DDI) team. 

In this role, the Policy Associate will use CPE’s needs assessment analysis plan to conduct reviews of law enforcement policies and propose recommendations to promote racial equity in law enforcement outcomes such as stops, searches, and use of force. The Policy Associate will work closely and collaboratively with the interdisciplinary COMPSTAT for Justice (C4J) team, providing consultation, thought partnership, and research assistance on policy issues that may inform quantitative analytic work and change management consultation led by other team members. Additionally, the individual will propose and produce original policy content that is responsive to emergent social and political issues. 

This position will report to the Policy Director for Data Driven Interventions.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide legal/policy QA for DDI products to ensure that data analysis decisions are aligned with legal definitions and common law enforcement agency practice (i.e. does a given dataset accurately align with our definition of pedestrian stops; is the categorization of types of force in line with legal definitions and industry norms).
• In accordance with the analytic plan, conduct policy reviews for agencies partnering with CPE.
• Conduct legal and policy research on promising, evidence-informed interventions to reduce racial disparities in policing outcomes.  
• Build working knowledge of behavioral science research on racial discrimination and leverage that knowledge to identify policy risks for inequitable policing practices.
• Draft policy-related content for DDI products. 
• Assist with production of external facing collateral on organizational policy stances aimed at a variety of audiences.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor Degree required
• 5+ years of professional experience in civil rights law, criminal law, law enforcement oversight, police policy analysis, or related field (could be mix of pre or post-JD experience)
• Ability to understand, interpret, and glean actionable insight from data analyses conducted by others
• Expertise in area and able to manage projects / specific scope and also able to make decisions for their day-to-day work
• Familiarity with legal and social science scholarship on policing and racial bias preferred
• Excellent writing skills
• Comfort with collaboration across a geographically distributed team
• Demonstrates strong critical thinking to solve complex problems
• Ability to quickly adapt to a growing organization
• Passionate about social and racial justice issues
