USPIRG seeks a Federal Legislative Director to join our team of over a dozen organizers, advocates, lawyers, researchers and policy analysts with a record of getting results that make a real difference in people’s lives.

PIRG stands for the Public Interest Research Group. We're an advocacy group that promotes the public interest.

Right now, we’re working on everything from reducing the overuse of antibiotics in the food industry to defending consumer protections on Wall Street. 

We don't see these problems as liberal or conservative. They’re problems that affect all of us, whether we live in a blue state, red state or purple state. We’re willing to work with just about anybody who’s willing to push past partisan gridlock and help us achieve concrete results.



 The Federal Legislative Director will:

-         Track and analyze U.S. federal policy issues related to USPIRG’s issue portfolio and make recommendations regarding policy positions and messaging;

-         Develop strong and collaborative relationships with federal agencies, partner organizations, coalitions, congressional staff of both parties, and other stakeholders to advance shared goals; 

-         Draft and develop legislative proposals and strategies to pass them into law;

-         Draft materials for lawmakers, the public, and the media, and other content to help advance our campaigns, including opinion editorials, press releases, letters to the editor, action campaign emails, factsheets, bill summaries and policy briefs, regulatory comments, analyses, and presentations;

-         Work with our existing staff of advocates and campaign staff to advance our policy goals;

-         Fundraise from charitable foundations and individual donors to support USPIRG’s program.


The ideal candidate will be:

-         An experienced communicator with excellent writing and verbal communication skills.

-         Creative, effective at solving complex problems, and a strategic thinker.

-         A good people-person/listener with a track record of successful access-building.

-         Well-organized and able to track multiple legislative and administrative proposals.

-         5 years of experience in advocacy, grassroots organizing, coalition-building and/or campaign politics.


Experience as a legislative advocate within Congress, the State Legislative or another organization is a plus but not required.
