The Homeless Children’s Playtime Project (HCPP) believes that all children, regardless of housing status, have the right to play, critical to nurturing healthy child development. Founded in 2003, Playtime has 15 years’ experience providing evening play programs for youth, ages 6 months to 18 years, in family homeless shelters across the District.


Looking beyond the 15 year milestone, Playtime is committed to deepening its level of service to children and families experiencing homelessness. The Development Director will play a key role in growing the organization’s revenue to support upcoming planned growth.

 

HCPP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing trauma-informed and educational play programs to strengthen resilience by nurturing social-emotional and problem solving skills. Playtime volunteers and programs bring joy, create a therapeutic environment, and provide access to community resources to families who are experiencing homelessness. Last year, 617 children made 6,923 visits to our playrooms:  6,923 opportunities to connect with a caring adult, build self-confidence and resilience, take healthy risk, solve problems creatively, develop new friendships, and enjoy a healthy snack.

 

Development Director Responsibilities include:

 

Strategy, Business Development & Sustainability

· Work closely with the Executive Director and Board-level Development Committee to chart Playtime Project’s growth and strategic response to the changing landscape of homeless services in Washington, D.C. as this relates to Playtime’s programs.

· Together with the Executive Director, design and execute an annual fundraising strategy to raise a minimum of  $1.2 million in annual operating and program support

· Provide regular reports on development progress against targets and work with E.D. to ensure organization meets revenue and fundraising targets

· Collaborate with program staff to determine funding needs and to generate program budgets

· Identify, cultivate, and deliver significant gifts from a diverse base of supporters (corporations, foundations, individuals) working in collaboration with the E.D. and Board

· Identify, cultivate, and secure relevant strategic partnerships that drive visibility and funding

· Create strategy for and guide content creation of Annual Appeal solicitations and other fundraising campaigns

· Collaborate with the  Communications Coordinator on donor-focused communication

· Manage relationships with major donors

· Attend, assist and represent the Playtime Project at various key Homelessness/affordable housing and fundraising events/functions, speaking engagements, tours, and other programs

· Host program site visits and seek new relationships in the philanthropic community

· Develop concepts for and lead planning of annual donor appreciation event and fall fundraising event

· Support the Executive Director in building the fundraising commitment and capacity of the board Board

 

Grants Management

· Develop and oversee grants strategy, including prospect research and nurturing relationships with current and prospective funders

· Responsible for drafting all grant LOIs, proposals, and reports

· In collaboration with Database & Development Operations Coordinator, maintain grants calendar, tracking all deadlines to share with Executive Director

· Document and communicate grant award information to finance and other accountable staff for internal tracking and coding purposes, to ensure program meets expectations outlined in proposal and funds are expended properly

· Collaborate with program staff to determine funding needs and to generate program budgets

· Collaborate with finance staff on generation of grant budgets and reports

· Engage the Executive Director and other staff as appropriate in the cultivation of grant funders

 

ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP & STAFF MANAGEMENT

· Directly supervise Database and Development Coordinator as well as Communications Coordinator to support development team functions

· Provide coaching, strategic guidance and critical feedback to staff, with a practice of mentorship, respecting the skills, strengths, contributions and challenges of individual team members

· Support the Special Projects and Operations Manager with in-kind donation drive support and guidance

· Promote a culture of philanthropy across the organization to encourage involvement of program staff and program volunteers in fundraising activities

 

ADMINISTRATION & OPERATIONS

· Develop and monitor budget for fundraising department in collaboration with E.D. and Finance Manager

· Develop and implement fundraising policies and procedures that reflect ethical practices

· Monitor progress against monthly dashboards and targets

· Update donor records in Salesforce with applicable information to support stewardship

· Work closely with the Database and Development Operations Coordinator, Communications Coordinator, and Operations & Special Projects Manager to ensure all fundraising activities are streamlined

 

REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

· Bachelor's degree required and Master’s degree in Public Relations, Business, Sales, Non-Profit Management, Marketing or related field preferred.

· Experience with direct solicitation required.

· Experience leading and managing staff in an innovative, entrepreneurial culture

· 5-10 years of fundraising and development experience, with a proven track record of success

· Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust within a team, as well as lead group presentations

· Requires flexibility to readily adapt to a changing environment

· Strong knowledge of effective fundraising strategies including grant seeking, individual donor cultivation, corporate employee volunteer programs, social media campaigns and event production

· Possess excellent organizational and analytical skills and the ability to multitask and meet aggressive deadlines

· Tech savvy and familiarity with donor management/engagement systems and online social networks

· Flexibility to work nights and weekends as needed

· Success in this position requires outstanding interpersonal skills
