The Opportunity.

The Education Assistant is responsible for supporting the creation and implementation of place-based environmental and agricultural educational programming on Martha’s Vineyard through the Claire Saltonstall Education Program. Working closely with the Islands Education Manager, the Education Assistant will engage families and especially young people, ages 2.5 – 18, in discovering the outdoor world through hands-on, experiential, place-based activities. The Education Assistant will work within the Martha’s Vineyard properties of Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge, Mytoi, Wasque, Long Point Wildlife Refuge, Menemsha Hills Reservation, Norton Point Beach, The FARM Institute, and The Brickyard. The Education Assistant will be a key member in the planning and development of new environmental education partner projects for The Claire Saltonstall Education Program.

The Education Assistant’s primary goal will be to use our property presence on Martha’s Vineyard as a foundation for unique educational programming and outreach efforts that will ultimately bring a new generation of young people and their families into the conservation movement. The goal of our inclusive and accessible programs is to provide a personal connection to both the land and the sea by presenting topics related to coastal education and resiliency, sustainable agriculture, and climate change. The Education Assistant will become familiar with and work under the goals of the new Island Education Initiative. Through the Island Education Initiative, we continue to partner with island schools, community groups, and peer organizations to provide quality learning experiences steeped in sustainability that enrich classroom curricula, support state education frameworks, and deepen the connection youth have with the environment.

In This Role You Will:

  • Help develop, lead and evaluate a range of creative environmental education programs and activities at The Trustees’ properties for children, adults, and families.
  • Maintain a strong relationship with the Martha’s Vineyard Public School System and Charter School.
  • Work with the Islands Education Manager to critically evaluate and shape future direction for the Claire Saltonstall Education Program and the Island Education Initiative.
  • Maintain Claire Saltonstall Education Program equipment, materials, and supplies in good order.
  • Assist, when needed, with programming or public interpretation on all Trustees' Martha's Vineyard properties.
  • Assist with the newly formed Coastal Education Volunteer Program.
  • Answer phone and email inquiries for programs and send surveys as program follow-up.
  • Assist with other operations on an as needed basis including set up and break down at events.
  • Assist with program scheduling and record-keeping.
  • Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation.
