Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeeper (LPOW) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of Lake Pend Oreille and its associated waterways through education, advocacy and community engagement. Located in beautiful Sandpoint, Idaho, LPOW and its members work to keep our local waterways swimmable, fishable and drinkable. LPOW is a member organization of the Waterkeeper Alliance (http://waterkeeper.org), which is the largest and fastest growing movement focused solely on clean water.


Position Description 

 

Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeeper seeks a dynamic self-starter with a passion for our organization’s mission to lead our clean water initiatives. The Waterkeeper will implement LPOW’s advocacy agenda and maintain LPOW’s presence on the water through seasonal water quality monitoring and active patrolling. This full-time staff person reports directly to the Executive Director of Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeeper and will be based out of LPOW’s downtown Sandpoint office location.

 

Duties


  • Establish a high-profile, watercraft-based presence on the waters within LPOW’s jurisdiction. This includes conducting field work, collecting data and frequently patrolling by watercraft when lake levels and weather allow.
  • Recognize, classify, document and prioritize threats to the waters within LPOW’s jurisdiction. Notify appropriate authorities, media and the public (as needed) for further investigation and resolution.
  • Lead LPOW’s citizen-science monitoring efforts and other related initiatives.
  • Track and comment on permits and other opportunities as needed and serve as a liaison with regulatory agencies and public advisory committees.
  • Research and develop recommendations for priority watershed policy issues that inform organizational advocacy goals, building strategic partnerships.
  • Organize occasional forums that inform community members of pertinent water issues; ensure media coverage and action alerts when necessary.
  • Support the Executive Director in fundraising efforts.
  • Assume other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental or water quality-related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience - advocacy, scientific field work or combination of the two.
  • Understanding of key environmental regulatory processes.
  • Ability to work with the public and citizens from diverse backgrounds.
  • Computer proficiency including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent communication skills: speaking, writing and diplomatic.
  • Ability to safely operate watercraft.
  • Flexibility to accommodate irregular daily tasks.
  • Commitment to Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeeper’s mission.

 

Preferred Qualifications


  • Master’s degree in a water-related field.
  • Grant writing/fundraising experience.
  • Understanding of the Clark Fork/Pend Oreille watershed.
  • Non-profit experience.

 

Salary Range: $40,000-$45,000 based on experience. Position is contingent on continued funding.
