The Amargosa Conservancy, a California and Nevada 501(c)3 with a nearly 20 year history of conservation action in the Death Valley region, seeks an executive director to lead the organization into the future.

The Amargosa Basin is one of the biodiversity hotspots of North America, home to dozens of species of plants and animals which live nowhere else on Earth. An oasis in the desert, the verdant springs which make up the Amargosa River form the beating heart of one of the wildest and most scenic areas in the Mojave Desert.

The Amargosa Conservancy is dedicated to standing up for the wilds, waters, and communities of the scenic Amargosa Basin and Eastern Mojave. The organization works for the conservation of the water resources of the Basin and the species which call them home through advocacy, science, education and outreach, stewardship, and community engagement.

The executive director (ED) will be responsible for executing the mission of the organization. The ED will be the sole staff member of the organization, responsible for the daily operations of the organization as well as implementation of projects. The job requires competencies in organizational management, the natural sciences, and public engagement.

The ED will be the public face of the organization, interfacing with the public, the media, government agencies, coalition partners, politicians, and funders. This will involve a significant travel commitment (~10-20% of time) around southern Nevada and eastern California. The ED will need to be proficient in public speaking, have excellent writing skills, and be able to organize and manage meetings. The ED will need to be comfortable with advocacy discussions with citizens and leaders of other organizations with diverse preferences, political representatives and policy-makers.

The ED will also need to run a highly organized and efficient day-to-day operation of the organization. This includes managing the finances of the organization, in conjunction with the board Treasurer, and Secretary in preparing requisite documents. The ED will develop, track, and manage the annual budget, track and manage finances using Quickbooks, including restricted funds, contracts, and agreements..

The ED will be responsible, in conjunction with the board’s Fundraising Committee, for fundraising. Significant portions of this budget come in the form of large grants from institutional grantors; however not insubstantial portions must be raised directly from the organization’s membership and from other funding sources. The ED will be responsible for developing new sources of long-term funding through donor cultivation, and managing the membership database. The ED will need a working knowledge of the biology and hydrology of the Amargosa Basin. Having such knowledge is not a prerequisite for the position. However, a background in the natural sciences, including biology, hydrology, or geology, is essential in order to ensure success in understanding and mastering the concepts behind the natural splendor of the Amargosa.

The ED will work closely with the organization’s board of directors. This includes facilitating monthly board calls, working with existing board members to recruit and cultivate new board members, consult with board committees as appropriate on projects and fundraising, implement board policies, and report project and organizational progress to the board.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent life/work experience in a professional setting.
  • Experience with the natural sciences, either through formal education, work experience, or personal initiative. This should include basic knowledge of ecology.
  • Experience with the desert, either through living or frequent visitation.
  • Experience with organizational management, including managing finances, developing budgets, and project management.
  • Comfort with direct political advocacy including experience communicating issues to the public and in the media.
  • Comfort with directly appealing for money to donors and grantors.
