Description

The Brooklyn Community Bail Fund pays bail for New Yorkers who can’t afford even modest amounts, and who would be jailed or forced to plead guilty just to go home. After bail is paid, the Fund provides and facilitates access to services for clients in need by partnering with teams of public defenders, reentry specialists, and social service providers.


We work with allies here in New York, and across the country, in the fight to end cash bail. Our organization is a radical intervention in a system that treats people differently based on wealth, skin color, and influence. We’re challenging the criminalization of race and poverty, the practice of putting a price on fundamental rights, and the persistent myth that bail is a necessary element of the justice system.


Since opening our doors in April 2015, we have expanded to serve more than 3,500 New Yorkers and now operate in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Staten Island. Brooklyn Community Bail fund seeks a Senior Client Services Associate to further BCBF’s mission to abolish money bail and all forms of wealth-based detention, end the criminalization of race and poverty, and drive incremental reforms to ensure harm reduction for individuals currently impacted by the system. The Senior Client Service Associate works within the Client Services Team and is responsible for conducting individualized client intake and referring clients to community-based services as requested, assisting the Director of Client Services in coordinating outreach assignments and training new client services associates and interns in job duties, and completing related projects as assigned by Director of Client Services.


Qualifications

(Required)


  • Demonstrated commitment to ending mass incarceration and to racial and economic justice.
  • Master's Degree in Social Work, or a related field. If MSW, should be licensed or in process to become licensed.
  • Completed the Seminar in Field Instruction (SIFI) course or willingness to take the seminar while supervising their first student.
  • 3+ years’ experience in a criminal legal organization, social service provider, and/or advocacy/organizing capacity
  • Possess knowledge of New York City social service providers and the ability to plan and successfully execute referrals to them
  • Knowledge of at least one of the following service areas in New York City: mental health services, drug treatment, trauma and abuse counseling, workforce development, education, housing, public assistance
  • Possess strong interpersonal and assessment skills and be able to interact with a multi-cultural and diverse population
  • Proven experience managing and collaborating. 
  • Ability to work well with a wide range of clients, including clients who are in crisis.
  • Objective listening skills with the capacity to effectively mediate
  • A willingness to work in a fast-paced environment and flexibility with changing schedules.
  • A team player with excellent communication and collaboration skills. 
  • Bilingual Spanish/English

Principal Responsibilities


Client Support and Services

  • Perform outreach with clients, both over the phone and in-person, to conduct individualized intake to determine needs and develop service referral plan.
  • Provide services on site as necessary, including transportation, emergency cell phones, care packages, clothing, and job preparation.
  • Provide information and referrals to community-based providers in areas of housing, employment, counseling, and benefits, and support clients throughout the process.
  • Perform data entry in online database.
  • Recognize and validate clients’ agency and humanity; operate with a nonjudgmental lens to provide support that does not resonate as surveillance or supervision.


Client Advocacy and Organizing

  • Provide assistance in navigating criminal court system through information, advocacy, accompaniment, and support.
  • Advocate with and behalf of clients with public defenders, social service providers, and criminal court actors and personnel.
  • Connect interested clients with local participatory defense hubs to impact the outcome of their court cases and to build community power.
  • Engage clients to become involved in ongoing campaigns related to criminal justice reform, specifically those to abolish money bail and to end the criminalization of race and poverty.


Training, Support, and SIFI Supervision

  • Assist Director of Client Services in developing and conducting training sessions and manual for new Client Services associates and interns.
  • Be available for follow-up questions and support.
  • Assist Director of Client Services in coordinating outreach assignments.
  • Conduct weekly support meeting with each MSW intern, according to SIFI supervision requirements.
  • Provide academic institution with necessary intern evaluations, reports, and feedback.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for MSW intern’s academic institution, advisors, and professors.

 

Communication and Partnerships

  • Serve as point of contact for other departments and program coordination between bail payment and follow up.
  • Create and maintain referral system, internally (between programs) and externally (to partner organizations and participatory defense hub).
  • Research new community partnerships and resources.
  • Cultivate relationships with specific partners, representing BCBF and Client Services, as assigned by Director of Client Services.
  • Develop and lead presentations with Client Services team to partner organizations.

 

Other Projects

  • Assist with client court reminders as necessary and as assigned by Director.
  • Research potential new community partnerships and resources.
  • Attend internal and external meetings, trainings, and workshops.
  • Represent BCBF at advocacy and fundraising events as assigned by Director.
