Nadia’s Initiative is on a mission to create a world where women are able to live peacefully, and where communities that have experienced trauma and suffering are supported and redeveloped. Nadia's Initiative advocates — at the local, national, and international levels — for resources and policy changes needed to protect and support survivors of sexual violence and rebuild communities in crisis. We collaborate with global leaders, governments, and international organizations to raise awareness and direct critical funding necessary to making positive, meaningful change. We hope you will join us!

Position Description:

We are looking for a Director of Policy and Legal Affairs to join our team. The Director of Policy and Legal Affairs is a new role within Nadia’s Initiative (NI), founded by 2018 Nobel Peace Laureate Nadia Murad, who is now President of the Board of Directors. The Director of Policy and Legal Affairs will join a small, hard-working and close-knit group of team members committed to the mission of NI. The Director of Policy and Legal Affairs will work closely with NI’s leadership to maximize the impact and reach of NI’s message, while spurring legal accountability for war crimes and legal redress for survivors. The Director of Policy and Legal Affairs will serve as a policy lead, a connector, and a strategist. This is a position best suited for an experienced, energetic professional who is passionate about women’s rights, the importance of rebuilding communities in crisis, and advocating for survivors of sexual violence. This position is eligible for remote work for qualified candidates living between UTC -5 (EST) and UTC +2.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead NI’s policy efforts, including strategy development, stakeholder engagement, policy development, and advocacy
  • Lead NI’s legal efforts, including managing a team of law students gathering background evidence against ISIS perpetrators and liaising with attorneys working on cases related to NI’s mission
  • Research, draft, and edit policy content
  • Keep leadership informed of relevant developments in human rights legal cases and current developments
  • Maintain knowledge of and relationships with key stakeholders and stakeholder groups, including government official, inter-governmental agencies, influencers, and key corporate contacts
  • Coordinate NI’s policy and legal work with its programs and communications teams to maximize the reach and impact of NI’s messaging.

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of full-time professional experience in nonprofit policy and/or human rights law
  • Legal background with fluency in areas of law related in NI's mission
  • Experience in relationship building with government officials and influencers
  • Passion for international development, human rights law, and women’s rights
  • Superb written and oral communication skills
  • Eye for strategic opportunities and ability to stay up to date on a variety of current events
  • Proactive, fast-paced work style that can take ownership and work independently, communicates clearly with the team, and works well under tight deadlines
  • Ability for periodic travel (approximately 10% of time)
