Role & Responsibilities

Contribute to HR’s strategic management and leadership in the organisation. This is achieved through: being a technical advisor to the HR Partner team at GSO, being a technical advisor/business partner to the HR departments of our programmes in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Yemen, developing partnership between HR and leadership in these programmes, supporting and leading change projects in HR across Medair.

Project Overview

Medair’s global HR function supports the organisation in the implementation of world class humanitarian aid projects by ensuring that the organisation has adequate systems and structures to efficiently recruit and retain the right people. The HR function is also working on impacting Medair’s culture by creating and sustaining a work environment where our values are fully alive and staff is being cared of through a “people to people” model.

Workplace & Conditions

Medair Global Support Office (GSO), Lausanne, Switzerland or Amman, Jordan (remote work is up for discussion). A valid work permit is required for any of those locations. Pending Covid-19 initiated changes, up to 8 weeks national and international travel to Medair’s country programmes locations and/or GSO Switzerland will be required.

Starting Date / Initial Contract Details

December 2020. Full time, open-ended contract.

Key Activity Areas

Technical Advisor

  • Provide technical advice to HR Partners and local HR Managers/Officers to build their capacity and ensure management and staff receive quality support.
  • Maintain a clear understanding and provide an up-to-date knowledge of the legal framework within which HR operates.
  • Assist in the development of HR related organisational policies and the local adaptation to country level policies or guidelines.
  • Assist in developing the HR community of practice in Medair and in holding the annual HR workshop.
  • Contribute to developing and delivering internal training materials and resources for HR, management and staff, aiming for raising the quality of line management and HRM in the organisation.
  • Provide advice and guidance to the HR management team on employment matters.
  • Be a member of the extended HR management team.
  • Deputise for the HR Operational Manager at GSO.

Strategic Partnering

  • Identify HR priorities from departmental and country programme strategy plans, assist in translating organisational requirements into effective HR practices and deliver people solutions aligned to organisational strategic objectives.
  • Provide technical HR advice and guidance to managers on HR matters, support managers in dealing with complex casework, performance, attendance and employee relations issues.
  • Influence management and the leadership around the People & Culture strategy.
  • Support the design and implementation of HR strategies aimed at improving retention of staff.
  • Analyse HR information to support the development and implementation of HR strategies and solutions. Ensure that all internal and external reporting requirements are satisfied/met and KPIs are monitored.
  • Ensure key stakeholders are informed or consulted on relevant changes and decisions such as restructures, redundancies and retirements.

Country Level Staff Support

  • Manage the administration of on- and off boarding for the International staff of the country portfolio.
  • Build and maintain relationships with international staff of the country portfolio, monitoring and reporting on overall well-being.
  • Serve as the HR Partner for new country programmes during the initial set up phase.

Project Management

  • Lead and coordinate on assigned HR projects, delivering on schedule, in scope and in collaboration with stakeholders and clients.
  • Identify the need for new projects and contribute to setting priorities of new initiatives.
  • Monitor and evaluate progress and results following project completion, reporting results and proposals for change to HR management.
  • Develop and maintain good relations (informal and formal) with the impacted/affected staff and leading on negotiations with their representatives where necessary.

Innovation/changes

  • Encourage initiatives for innovation and improvements in HR and in the organisation.
  • Lead by example in driving for continuous improvement of key processes, policies, procedures and information systems.
  • Lead and deliver on assigned HR change projects, in collaboration with stakeholders and clients.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in HR. Swiss HR Administration certification or other equivalent (local or international).
  • Strong working knowledge of English (spoken and written). French desirable.

Experience / Competencies

  • Over 5 years in a HR position as a generalist. Experience in a supervisory capacity and dealing with employee relations will be a plus. Experience with an HR information system is a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent customer service skills.
  • Strong project management skills. Ability to coach, train and provide pastoral care.
  • Ability to work within a multicultural team. Sensitive to cultural differences in behavior.
