Duration of Contract:

Position will last for 12 months from Aug. 2021 to July 2022. This paid part-time position will be for flexible hours for approximately 20 hours per week.

Position Overview:

The Youth Food Justice Organizer is a new part-time, one-year position that will support a pilot program to increase the capacity of New York City youth food justice leaders to engage in youth-led advocacy and build collective power.

The main duties of the Organizer are to support the design and implementation of a youth food justice and advocacy community organizing initiative in New York City and manage youth ages 15 to 17 who are participating in the project. The Organizer will coordinate and lead Equity Advocates’ youth advocacy and education efforts to empower NYC youth to shape food systems policy and lift up youth-led solutions to food inequity. The Organizer will strengthen the advocacy skills and food policy knowledge of and incorporate youth voices into current and future NYC advocacy campaigns focused on urban agriculture and food justice as both participants and leaders.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Youth Food Justice Initiative (75% of time)

  • Collaborate with EA leadership to implement youth food justice pilot and adapt as needed.
  • Help recruit youth leaders and maintain regular contact throughout the year.
  • Co-develop food policy and advocacy trainings for youth and host workshops to train youth in organizing & leadership skills and policy education.
  • Employ a train-the-trainer model with up to 6 youth leaders to support them in creating and facilitating youth-led advocacy workshops for peers to be presented at an end of the year Youth Food Justice Network conference.
  • Coordinate, and facilitate regular meetings with youth food justice leaders.
  • Support youth participation in citywide youth organizing campaigns through the New York COVID-19 Food Coalition
  • Track program activities and outputs according to agreed upon evaluation criteria.

Support EA (25% of time)

  • Attend and help Equity Advocate’s leadership coordinate biweekly Coalition meetings.
  • Support Equity Advocates staff to develop, coordinate and evaluate capacity building workshops for food justice nonprofits across NYC.
  • Craft and send out EA’s monthly newsletter.
  • Collect relevant weekly news and policy updates for EA partners and Coalition members.
  • Provide social media support.

Desired Qualifications :

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • At least 1 year of previous community or youth organizing experience and/or experience working within the food justice sector.
  • At least 1 year of nonprofit or professional office experience.
  • Experience with group facilitation and/or running and designing interactive workshops.
  • Working knowledge of NYC food justice and food systems issues.
  • Strong interest in policy, advocacy and community organizing.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social and racial justice and institutional change.
  • Experience working with groups of youth ages 15 to 17.
  • Experience working with youth from diverse ethnic and class backgrounds.
  • Strong communication skills, ability to work independently.
  • Strong computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Access to the internet and computer required.

Salary
