                                      Executive Director Position Description


The Organization 

SPRYE (Staying Put in Rye & Environs) is an innovative nonprofit organization established in 2011 to provide a support network for residents (60 years of age and older) in Harrison, Port Chester, Rye and Rye Brook. SPRYE's services and programs help its members continue to enjoy a satisfying lifestyle while remaining active in their homes and communities.

SPRYE is one of a growing number of independent “aging-in-place” (AIP) organizations around the country, including ones in the nearby communities of Bronxville, Greenwich, Larchmont/ Mamaroneck, White Plains, Tarrytown and New Canaan. It is also a member of the national association known as the Village to Village Network.

SPRYE’S members receive a variety of services, including:

*Transportation for medical appointments, shopping and other essential errands.

*Participation in social, educational and cultural activities.

*In-home support and technology assistance.

*Referrals to vetted professional service providers.

The Position

SPRYE is seeking an Executive Director (ED) who would begin work on or about June 1, 2018, succeeding SPRYE’s first ED, who is retiring. Compensation will be competitive and commensurate with the candidate’s skills, experience and work schedule.

The ED will be responsible for executing SPRYE’s mission and managing its daily operations, reporting to the President and working closely with other members of the Executive Committee and Board. The primary responsibilities of the ED include:

Member Services

*Actively recruit new members and retain existing members. Growing membership is a priority.

*Maintain supportive relationships with members.

*Monitor needs and interests of members.

*Coordinate with Board committee on educational, cultural and social programs and events.

*Respond to changing needs of members in developing new programs and services.


*Supervise and recruit volunteers in concert with the Board.

*Work with Board committee to train, utilize and evaluate volunteers.

Service Providers and Partner Organizations

*Establish and monitor agreements with professional service providers and partner organizations.

*Refer service providers to members and monitor member satisfaction with their performance.


*Manage the employee and volunteer personnel.

*Oversee member, donor, accounting, volunteer and other systems and databases.

*Monitor the technology and other needs of the SPRYE office.

*Administer Board-approved personnel, privacy and other policies.

Financial and Fund Raising

* Assist the Treasurer to develop, recommend and monitor annual budget.

* Support Board committee in fundraising activities, including cultivating sponsors and donors.

* Support the grant application process.

* Oversee Benefit committee with planning and implementation of annual benefit.

Board Relations

* Regularly review for the Board SPRYE’s status and developments.

* Attend Board Committee meetings and assist them in achieving goals.

* Oversee development of materials for new Board member orientation.


Public Relations

* Oversee publicizing SPRYE with civic groups and the media.

* Supervise the newsletter, calendar of events, website, annual report and other communications.

* Develop a strategic communication plan and build relationships with the media and other groups

The Candidate

Types of Experience

*Senior management experience working with a non-profit organization and board.

*Experience and patience dealing with members, donors and volunteers.

*Excellent writing and communication skills.

*Social media skills such as managing web manager, Facebook, etc.

*Strong and relevant academic background.

Personal Characteristics

*Must be “a people person” who is committed to meeting the needs of SPRYE’S members.

*Must be flexible and empathetic.

*Must have initiative and negotiating skills as well as a strong commitment to results.

*Must have strong verbal and written communication skills and organizational abilities.
