Integrated Defense Practice Custody Attorney

Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) represents approximately 30,000 clients per year in a variety of legal proceedings in New York City, primarily indigent criminal, family, and immigration defense. We also provide legal representation for our clients on a variety of issues, including housing, education, employment and wide-reaching immigration legal services. We are one of the largest public defense providers in New York and the United States; representing people who have diverse, complex, and multi-faceted needs in a high volume and fast-paced setting.

BDS’ Integrated Defense Practice represents clients who have concurrent criminal and child protective proceedings in Criminal Court, Supreme Court and Family Court. The team of attorneys, social workers, and paralegals work closely together to provide comprehensive representation to parents by coordinating defenses in their criminal and child protective proceedings to ensure the best outcomes for clients and their families.

Under the general supervision of the Attorney-in-Charge, Integrated Defense, the Custody attorney works alongside criminal defense attorneys, social workers, and paralegals to provide comprehensive legal representation to clients with open criminal court cases who are unable to see their children due to active Orders of Protection.

Responsibilities

• Partner with criminal defense attorneys in the direct representation of criminal defense clients on custody and visitation matters in Family Court,

• Work closely with social workers and paralegals to provide comprehensive services for clients, collaborating on strategy and work product and ensure the best dispositions are reached in both family and criminal court.

• Prepare and litigate custody and visitation hearings and trials in family court.

• Provide advice to criminal defense clients seeking to file custody or visitation petitions in family court.

• Utilize BDS resources, such as housing, immigration, and education attorneys to assist clients.

• Work in a team of attorneys and social workers with dual expertise in family and criminal court and participate in workshops with the goal of growing the team’s cross-practice expertise.

• Engage in trainings and seminars on criminal and child welfare law and their intersections with custody and visitation matters.

• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Admission to the New York bar or ability to become admitted.

• At least two years of trial court litigation experience representing clients in custody and visitation hearings.

• Creative and innovate strategist with an interest in cross-practice issues.

• Excellent interpersonal skills, including an ability to work independently and in a team setting.

• Efficient, organized work style and an ability to prioritize quickly and confidently and manage multiple deadlines and emergencies.

• Strong interest in criminal law.

• Passion for Brooklyn Defender Services’ mission with a demonstrated commitment to social justice.
