The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking applicants for the position of Associate Director to focus on fundraising and outreach events and initiatives in the Zurich office. This full-time position will be based in our Zurich office and will report to the Managing Director, Europe in the Development and Outreach Department.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely if local mandates necessitate. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position. 

Responsibilities:

1.     Build financial support for the organization by designing and managing the Zurich development and outreach strategy;

2.    Collaborate with the Zurich team to expand support for the organization by researching, identifying, cultivating, and soliciting philanthropic commitments from current supporters and prospective donors, including individuals, foundations, and corporations, with a focus on major and leadership donors;

3.    Work with the Managing Director, Europe to build, cultivate, steward, and solicit new philanthropic networks and support outside of Zurich in other parts of German and Italian speaking Switzerland;

4.    Manage the Zurich Committee, directing the group’s efforts in line with fundraising, outreach, and cultivation initiatives; develop a diverse, equitable and inclusive committee and keep the members engaged through regular meetings, communication, and specific missions, whether in sub-committees or ad hoc working groups;

5.     Manage and work closely with the Zurich Executive Committee;

6.    Present the work of HRW to existing and prospective supporters;

7.     Develop and guide the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) strategy of the Zurich Committee;

8.    In collaboration with Zurich team members, help to build and expand the Zurich human rights community by managing the production of fundraising, outreach, and cultivation events, including HRW’ s annual benefit dinner, researcher briefings, privately hosted dinners, panel discussions, and community outreach engagements;

9.    Identify new outreach opportunities for the Zurich Committee and community and form relationships with partner organizations;

10.  Oversee gift processing and donor support services for Zurich in Salesforce; create and regularly monitor the budget;  

11.  Deliver output in a timely manner and be consistent with the agreed strategy and priorities of the Development and Outreach department;

12.  Supervise Zurich team members; and

13.  Perform other responsibilities as may be required.

Managerial Responsibilities:

1.     Lead, motivate, and mentor direct-reports, including communicating clear expectations, setting performance objectives, providing regular and timely constructive feedback, ensuring balanced workload, providing guidance on professional growth, and monitoring staff well-being as it pertains to stress and resilience issues and self-care;

2.    Promote inclusive and positive work environment including by soliciting diverse points of views, encouraging staff to participate in DE&I efforts, and proactively addressing bias, discrimination, microaggressions, etc;

3.    Model inclusive behavior and consistently adhere to HRW’s internal values;

4.    Incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion values and initiatives into the division’s work; and

5.     Work with staff to develop initiatives aimed at movement-building and expanding our partnership with diverse clients/donors/stakeholders and partners.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in international relations, journalism, law, social sciences, communications/marketing, or related studies is required. An advanced degree in one of these fields is desirable.

Experience: A minimum of five years of fundraising experience with major and leadership donors and management experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

  1. Excellent oral and written communication skills in German and English are required; proficiency in Italian is desired.
  2. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW is required.
  3. Familiarity with the Swiss philanthropic community is desirable.
  4. Ability to multi-task effectively, including having good planning and organizing skills and ability to work well under pressure are required.
  5. Creativity, initiative, follow-through, and excellent organizational skills are required.
  6. Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with committee members and external partners are required. Track record of effective team work is highly desirable.
  7. Experience working within international contexts is highly desirable.
  8. Strong technology skills, including experience with donor databases (preferably Salesforce) are highly desirable.
