Job Description

Global Poverty Project is seeking a driven, passionate and effective campaigner to coordinate Global Citizen’s US policy and advocacy campaigns, government relations, and partnerships.


As the US Policy and Government Affairs Manager for Global Citizen, you will manage all of Global Citizen’s advocacy campaigns across a range of national issues, working closely with our partners – some of the leading NGOs and campaigning organizations in the development sector, that are based in the United States, including faith-based organisations and US Government agencies.


You will be our key interface with the US government, helping to form and foster relationships with key decision makers, building on GC’s existing and significant footprint, including ahead of the 2018 Global Citizen Festival in New York.


In close collaboration with our global policy issue leads, you’ll be channeling the energy of millions of US global citizens to effective action, linking their passion to the campaigns that will make the biggest difference to breaking down the barriers that keep people poor, globally, including poor health, hunger, lack of education, poor sanitation, and gender discrimination.


Working alongside campaigners and communicators in New York, Toronto, London, and Melbourne, you’ll be accountable for ensuring that we’re delivering impactful actions for the world’s poor, a meaningful experience for global citizens, and added value to our dozens of NGO partners.


Key Deliverables

Policy Campaigning / Government Relations

  • Secure partnerships with advocacy groups that can push out our campaigning actions
  • 5+ NGOs publicly support campaigns
  • Build and maintain relationships in the US with key policy makers and their staff around support for GC priority policy issues. (ie. Global Education, WASH, Girls and Women, Food and Hunger and Maternal/Child Health and vaccines including polio eradication, refugees and migration)
  • Create Parliamentary and sub-National champions for our policy priorities securing videos, speaking engagements, quotes etc. to demonstrate the impact of Global Citizen actions
  • Secure new at least 5 new parliamentary champions for GC issues
  • Secure at least 5 new champions for legislative and foreign aid priorities
  • Work to position GC as a convener around our policy focus areas i.e. the private sector, influencers etc
  • Engage in relevant key political and convening moments where the US is involved, including the G7, G20, UNGA leaders meeting and ASEAN conference
  • Secure US representation in major GC events globally, including the Global Citizen Festival, as well as at major global summits such as the G20

 

Job Outline and Key Responsibilities

  • Campaign coordination:
  • Oversee advocacy campaign execution, working closely with the digital team (who create most of the editorial content, campaign emails, social assets, etc.)
  • Lead and manage the execution of reactive advocacy campaigning as events and moments arise in the news cycle
  • Ensure ongoing diversity of campaigns and actions across Global Citizen to maximise user engagement
  • Partnership management:
  • Support NGO partners to win campaigns with the support of Global Citizen
  • Serve as the Global Citizen representative on joint/coalition campaigns with NGO partners such as Nutrition for Growth, Global Fund Replenishment, or Global Goals advocacy
  • Coordinate Global Citizen’s action exchange with NGO partners - enabling them to test content and actions to appropriate segments of our base
  • Onboard new partners to meet user interests and evolving advocacy opportunities
  • Working closely with the Programs team, coordinate NGO partner participation in events and programs throughout the year
  • Coordinate on-site activations for NGO partners at Global Citizen events, including Global Citizen Festival
  • Knowledge sharing:
  • Collect, analyze, and report metrics around digital campaigns to the internal team and to relevant partners
  • Develop and share best practices for campaigning


Essential Skills & Experience

  • 4+ years of experience that includes a combination of:
  • Government relations (US government, Administration, staffer experience preferable)
  • Online campaigning/organizing with a focus on recruitment and engagement
  • Rapid response email and social media campaigning
  • Offline grassroots organizing or event management
  • Experience developing campaigns from concept through execution
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Knowledge and execution of best practices in online organizing
  • Ability to work well under pressure and tight deadlines, and stay organized to get campaigns out the door
  • Collaborative style and strong work ethic
  • Experience working in a dynamic team environment, remotely and autonomously
  • Deep experience in coordinating with multiple teams across multiple partners
  • Fluent in digital campaigning metrics, with the ability to know how to collect and analyze data
  • Able to facilitate strategic and tactical decision-making on a day-to-day basis
  • Demonstrated interest in the international development sector

 

Key Deliverables

U.S. Policy Campaigning / Government Relations

  • Build first-name relationships and maintain regular contact (ie. bi-weekly) in Washington DC with at least 6 key policy makers and their staff around support for GC priority policy issues in the U.S. (ie. Global Education, WASH, Girls and Women, Food and Hunger and Maternal/Child Health and vaccines including polio eradication, refugees and migration)
  • Create 10+ Congressional and sub-National champions for our policy priorities securing videos, quotes etc. to demonstrate the impact of Global Citizen(GC) actions
  • Secure new at least 5 new congressional champions for education
  • Secure at least 10 new co-sponsors for annual legislative priorities
  • Secure approval from House Foreign Relations Committee for at least one legislative priority position
  • Work to position GC as a convener around our policy focus areas in the US i.e. the private sector, influencers etc
  • Secure US representation in major GC events including the Global Citizen Festival, New York

 

Advocacy activities

Working with the broader global policy team and engaged advisory services (where relevant):

  • Target key US political influencers with letters, meetings, social media, etc. and develop political advocates
  • Encourage US engagement in global platforms, international fora and events and advocate for for initiatives happening in the US i.e. Global Citizen Festival, G20, Women Deliver, G7
  • Presentations to DC lobbyists and private sector with outreach to USG on GC and its priorities
  • Manage US Policy and Advocacy Committee of private sector stakeholders, under the supervision of Director, Global Policy and Government Affairs. Convene quarterly USPA committee meetings
  • Create 2+US-facing campaigns that address US support for Global Citizen priority issues including,but not limited to, database emails, action copy and language, digital assets, social media posts and packs, written and video content, speeches and events, on-stage programming and impact reporting
  • Conduct 2+ activities nationally to engage GCs in advocacy and outreach to their local representatives or on GC priority issues
  • Cultivate 2+ youth advocates annually that can advocate to the USG on GC priorities
  • Monitor and track accountability against USG commitments made on the GC platform
  • Interact with wider GC team including digital and marketing personnel, content and GPGA issue leads and other market leads in support of US facing advocacy and campaigns
  • Collaborate with US Policy & Advocacy - Grassroots Manager on ways to engage GC grassroots supporters on USG facing campaigns and initiatives
