Legal Outreach seeks a Law-Related Education Coordinator to assist in its law-based programs that work with NYC's youth to help get them ready for college and beyond!

Organization Profile: For over 35 years, Legal Outreach has used law-based programs to change the educational trajectory of students from underserved communities in New York City. Through the implementation of a series of intensive legal and educational programs, Legal Outreach provides high school students with the vision, skills, and support they need to matriculate at selective colleges and competitive law schools.

Start date: Immediately

Hours Academic year hours are generally 11-7pm, Monday-Friday; summer hours are 10-6pm, Monday-Friday; Coordinator will work occasional Saturdays (3-4) during the year

Wage: Comparable to other non-profit/public interest salary; fringes include generous holiday and vacation benefits, medical and dental coverage, sick days, personal hours, etc.

Location: Long Island City, Queens (13 min from Midtown Manhattan).

Principal Duties & Responsibilities|

Under the supervision of the Director of Legal Education:

· Coordinate the Constitutional Law Debate Program, including recruiting and training law student coaches, creating and refining debate problems, designing lesson plans, and instructing high school students on legal issues;

· Assist with coordination of Mentoring program, including recruitment of attorney mentors, managing mentor-mentee pairs, and organizing social-cultural events;

· Recruit 8th grade students to participate in Summer Law Institutes by presenting law lessons at schools in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens;

· Recruit college students to perform coordination role at Summer Law Institutes;

· Assist in hiring and training of law student teaching fellows in substantive aspects of criminal law, criminal trial procedure, and pedagogical techniques,

· Develop mock trial cases and materials for Summer Law Institutes;

· Oversee the implementation of Legal Outreach’s Summer Law Institutes at various law schools;

· Coordinate and execute events related to the Debate, Mentoring, and Summer Law Institute programs for students, parents, coaches, mentors, and sponsors;

· Assist with program-related administrative tasks.

Requirements

· Candidates must have obtained a JD.

· Candidate must be willing to make a 2-year commitment.

· Candidate must have strong oral, writing, and interpersonal skills, and commitment to advancing the organization’s mission through collaboration across departments.

· Candidate must be passionate about advancing educational opportunities for urban youth.

· Candidate must exhibit the capacity to build relationships with and motivate high school students.

· Candidates must have understanding of the dynamics and needs of a mid-size non-profit and commitment to creating and participating in its community.

· Legal experience, teaching experience or prior involvement with schools, community activities, or youth programs is a definite plus but not an absolute requirement.
