About the Organization

Founded in 2008, Civic Influencers is a national nonpartisan 501 c 3 organization whose mission is to increase youth civic power and youth voting, giving emphasis to Black, Indigenous and Youth of Color. At this pivotal time, the landscape for young people understanding, and participating in, our democracy is changing so rapidly that they may never inherit the future we promised. Rigorous novel data collection and analysis are now driving our youth centric voting interventions, and determining what we are scaling. This data driven approach will have a greater impact on increasing young people’s voting and civic power.

“These times call for rigorous and data driven work, to effectively mobilize young people both on- and off-campus in strategic districts. We must bridge the town and gown divide, continue to work with two- and four-year college faculty and administrations, partner with community groups, and support young people’s participation in social justice movements.” - Maxim Thorne, Esq., Civic Influencers CEO

Re-imagining why, how and where we engage youth voters

We are committed to ensuring young voices and votes matter in our democracy. We have reimagined how and where to engage young voters. The data compels us to center racial equity and the enfranchisement of Black, Indigenous and Youth of Color (BIYoC), and to increase our work in key states and at People of Color Serving Institutions (PoCSIs), including Tribal Campuses, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and more. We adopted our Organizing, Advocacy and Learning model to equip young people to dismantle barriers to voting.

How we power young voices and votes

With surgical precision, lawmakers are depriving young people of their right to vote. They have introduced over 400 voting bills in 49 states during 2021 alone, 28 of which have already been signed into law. They are targeting BIYoC populations especially. They are gerrymandering predominantly Black colleges, banning polling sites and prohibiting voter registration on campuses, and rejecting student IDs as voter IDs. The intent is to remove youth and BIYoC voters because of their success in impacting important elections in 2020 and in January 2021.

New data-driven interventions are being deployed to help young people confront the horrifying movement of voter suppression bills across the US, which coincides with a fourth wave of COVID. We have designed three major series of interventions to dismantle new and existing barriers: Youth Civic Power, Campus Civic Power, and Institution Civic Power. We are training and deploying 600 Fellows - called “Civic Influencers” - both on- and off- campus to influence their peers and communities, through on-the-ground and digital organizing, that will lead to increased youth voter turnout and civic power.

Role Overview

Civic Influencers is seeking an Experimental Design person with experience in data research, management and analysis who will be responsible for collecting, organizing and analyzing key data points and trends regarding youth voter suppression legislation and laws from across the country. We seek an expert in research methods, experimental design, statistical analysis and developing working systems to support research. The ideal candidate will be a subject matter expert in statistical methods or machine learning, is scrappy, focused on results, self-motivated and has a history of solving problems with data solutions.

The Experimental Design person will apply their skills to manage a visual dashboard of voter suppression legislation and laws -- including indicators, indexes and toolkits -- to maintain Civic Influencers’ tool for measuring youth voter suppression. The Experimental Design person will use this information and research on leveraging large data sets and developing experiments to develop an empirically supported point of view on Civic Influencers’ data-driven strategy of deepening its work with youth in states where voter suppression is most rampant. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data science, research methods and statistics. Reporting to the Data Scientist, the subsequent tasks and duties will fall within the following buckets across the Information Team, including:

Data Collection & Management

  • Apply expertise in quantitative analysis, data mining, and the presentation of data to measure and communicate the effectiveness of Civic Influencers’ impact on combating youth voter suppression
  • Assess the validity and rigor of new data sources and approaches in their use toward applied research audience insights
  • Proactive creation of youth centric voting interventions research, driven to show value, insights, or missed opportunities
  • Oversee data-focused initiatives already in place and being developed, and drive developments in the quality of these initiatives
  • Package these insights effectively for both internal and external audiences
  • Master and be responsible for the analytical understanding of customer behavior and business performance.
  • Find the “story” in the data and communicate insights and opportunities with executive and other internal teams.
  • Perform ongoing ad-hoc analyses to evaluate the efficiency of our marketing spend, building reporting infrastructure, and assisting in making budgeting recommendations to optimize growth.
  • Integrate captured respondent data with other sources of voting data, such as surveys, ad publishers and app store data.

Reporting

  • Weekly, conduct analysis on predefined data sets and sources from data tool to provide timely and relevant information for Civic Influencers’ strategy.
  • Coordinate and execute cross-departmental reporting and data visualization initiatives as assigned by leadership.
  • In collaboration with the Blue Ribbon Panel and stakeholders across Civic Influencers, create reports to demonstrate the impact of work across the youth civic landscape.

Data Training & Learning

  • Participate in Tableau training modules to learn best practices for building out digestible indexes and toolkits.
  • Participate in additional external trainings and modules to stay abreast of best practices in data management to ensure Civic Influencers is utilizing current tools.
  • Provide training to Civic Infleuncers Staff and Fellows on data tool design and how to input data collected from the field into the matrix accurately.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science or a related field preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience in data collection and analysis, including familiarity with common database, statistical, and geographic analysis software such as SAS, R, SQL and GIS programs.
  • Knowledge of statistics, specifically experimental design and analysis.
  • Knowledge and experience with utilizing Salesforce and Tableau programs.
  • Experience and interest in training novice data staff to understand and properly utilize data management tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills; including the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with other staff, partner organizations, elected and appointed officials, corporate/business representatives, and community members.
  • Commitment to transparency, accountability, and direct communication.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and tight deadlines.

Desired Skills

  • Experience working in a movement organization, including ones focused on Voting Rights, Social Justice, Civil Rights or Youth.
  • Experience working in politics.
  • Experience working with or within a higher education institution, People of Color Serving Institutions (PoCSIs, e.g., HSIs and HBCUs a plus).
