The Director of Policy is part of the administrative team at Briya Public Charter School — a leading two-generation education program serving parents and their young children. Briya is a Tier One Public Charter School, consistently achieving the highest educational outcomes through its innovative, family-centric programming.


Briya’s education program is diverse and wide-ranging and requires gaining expertise across several education programs and partner agencies. The Director of Policy will be highly collaborative; an exceptional communicator, researcher and writer; and able to leverage program success into compelling reports and other materials to persuasively represent Briya’s mission and unique programming.


Job Functions:


  • Provide summaries, reports, policy briefs, presentations, and other materials on public and educational issues and policy solutions that help educate the staff, the public, the media and government policy makers. Report results of statistical analyses, including information in the form of graphs, charts, and tables.


  • Maintain an overview of current educational research trends both nationally and locally. Provide information to supervisor, the Management Team, staff, and the Briya Board of Trustees. Explain key issues and possible solutions using qualitative and quantitative data. Work with Management Team to develop ideas and solutions to key issues in education and develop policy proposals for addressing them according to research and best practices. Support Briya’s key stakeholders in being a credible and informed influence on local and national education policy. Ensure that the community realizes its commitment to Family Literacy.


  • Respond to external request for information on the school and its policies.


  • Present findings to the Public Charter School Board, Briya Board of Trustees, OSSE, public hearings, institutional and state policy audiences, media interviews, and other audiences as needed. Coordinate materials to be presented in consultation and dialogue with key individuals from the Management Team and/or the Board of Trustees.


  • Analyze Briya’s data and outcomes reported to PCSB, OSSE and other funders to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and validity.


  • As needed, assist the Director of Development and Accountability in evaluating data quality policies and initiatives and the maintenance and publication of data submission rules, guidelines, and editing processes. Identify relationships and trends in multi-year data, as well as any factors that could affect the results of the annual data. Evaluate the methods and procedures used to obtain data at Briya to ensure validity, applicability, efficiency, and accuracy. Review and update policies with input from key individuals from the Management Team.


  • Serve as advocate and liaison with other community agencies. Develop a strategy for working with local and national education coalitions to analyze the local and national educational scene from a critical perspective.


  • As an active member of the management team, provide leadership and assist in short and long term program planning. Facilitate decision making with the organization’s staff and students. Strive to use the consensus model with staff when making policy and program decisions.


  • Assist with the completion of monthly, semi-annual and annual program reports to adult education funders as needed. Assist in the production of grant proposals, annual reports, and other public communications for Briya/Mary’s Center.


  • Work with the monitoring teams who visit the Briya/Mary’s Center sites.


  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and trainings as requested.


  • Supervises Policy Intern. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies. Responsibilities include creating position description; interviewing; training; planning, assigning, and directing work; addressing complaints; and resolving problems.


  • Coordinates and leads advocacy actions for the Board of Trustees, Management Team, staff, students, community partners, and partner schools. Creates strategy and coordinates collective action. Develops message, testimony, letters, talking points, and social media tactics. Provides training as needed.


  • Develops and leads the evaluation plan for the Community Schools Incentive Initiative grant.


  • Coordinate and manage grant planning, grant writing, and grant reporting as needed.


  • Lead and manage the annual compliance review process from the charter authorizer.



Education and/or Experience:


  • Master’s degree in education, policy, research or its equivalent in experience.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Superb grassroots skills including the personal presence and communication skills necessary to effectively develop relationships with and convey ideas and positions to numerous audiences including legislators, superintendents, funders, principals, community groups, teachers, students, and parents.
  • Deep respect for and commitment to parent and community self-efficacy and decision-making to impact their lives.
