Reno, Nevada
The Walker Basin Conservancy (Conservancy) leads the effort to restore and maintain Walker Lake while protecting agricultural, environmental and recreational interests in the Walker Basin of Nevada and California.
Since 2017, the Conservancy has taken the lead as the steward of the Walker Basin Restoration that began in 2009. Specifically, the Conservancy acquires and protects water to reestablish native Lahontan cutthroat trout, and other keystone species in Walker Lake, while promoting a healthy river and watershed. Through an established property and water acquisition program, the Conservancy cultivates relationships and completes contractual agreements with willing sellers to restore the Walker River and Lake. With state and local partners, the Conservancy manages intensive restoration and stewardship activities on thousands of acres in the Basin. This includes overseeing revegetation and reclamation activities and habitat enhancement of land and river. It also facilitates ongoing monitoring and research of river and lake with federal (e.g., US Geological Survey) and state (e.g., Nevada Department of Wildlife) collaborators. Through a series of successful water rights purchases and transformation of water for environmental benefits, the Conservancy protects and monitors acquired water resources to ensure that they are used as intended for riparian habitat and to increase stream flows to Walker Lake.
The dynamic nature of the Conservancy and its diverse resource management portfolio provide unique opportunities to develop innovative, interdisciplinary conservation solutions while working closely with a dedicated and passionate staff. The Conservancy team is comprised of approximately 25 full-time employees and increases up to 70 during our field season.
