Program Overview:

The Henry Street Early Childhood Program aims to provide a challenging and inventive curriculum for children ages two to five years old. Our classrooms are designed to expand and awaken the minds of every child who attends, and we provide support for social/emotional, physical, cognitive and language development for our children in order to establish the highest quality early childhood education.

We believe that children learn best when they are in an environment which is both inspiring and nurturing, and at Henry Street Settlement, our Preschool and Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) programs are designed to give each child a high-quality, experiential education.


Job Summary: The role of the Family Social Worker (FSW) is to assess and work with all the children enrolled in the ECE program, especially those with diagnosed disabilities. The FSW will also work with families and the staff in an effort to efficiently coordinate resources and ensure that enrolled children are receiving the appropriate services in a timely manner. The FSW will attend Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) meetings and workshops pertaining to Mental Health and Students with Disabilities, and support parents through the CPSE or Early Intervention (EI) process.


 Qualifications:

  • Bachelors in Social Work required
  • Experience and familiarity working with agencies that assist children and families with special needs (i.e. Committee on Preschool Special Education, other similar organizations).
  • Bilingual Spanish/English or Cantonese/Mandarin/English strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Lower East Side community and resources.
  • Knowledge of Early Childhood, ACS, DOE, Head Start, etc. preferred.
  • Strong computer skills; Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel required.


Responsibilities:

  • Work with children enrolled in Henry Street Settlement Early Childhood Education Program, especially those with disabilities and their families, and working with them and the staff in an effort to efficiently coordinate resources and ensure that enrolled children are receiving needed, appropriate services in a timely manner.
  • Facilitate parent/caregiver/family workshops on a variety of topics as needed and encourage active parent involvement surrounding Mental Health and Disabilities Services and CPSE.
  • Attend meetings and workshops pertaining to Students with Disabilities, and bring back the information to share with administrators and teachers.
  • Maintain and update program documentation and reports, data of individual Mental Health and Disabilities Services records for each child in regards to which services are needed. (i.e. IEP)
  • Make and accept referrals for children and families to/from external agencies for student related services (CPSE), Early Intervention, and community resources.
  • Coordinate and conduct orientations such as child abuse prevention, program policy and procedures, curriculum, etc.
  • Act as a liaison between parents and teachers with outside provider and coordinate meetings.
  • Plan and implement the 45-day initial student assessment (i.e. ASQ, ESI-R).
  • Complete a family assessment with each family to identify goals and action plans to meet both short and long term goals. This is done in partnership with the Family Assistant.
  • Conduct outreach in the neighborhood and partner with local agencies such as public libraries, elementary schools, and hospitals. 
  • In an emergency situation, conduct a home visit to ensure child safety.
  • Assist in classroom when teachers or volunteers are not available.
  • Other related duties as assigned by Supervisor. 


Essential Physical Job Functions: Candidate must be able to work with children in the classroom either at the child’s table or on the floor. Candidate must also be able to be active in the gym and the terrace with the children.
