Title: Associate Director of Youth Services

Status: Exempt

Manager: Vice President for Community Programs 

Agency: Family Services is a large not-for-profit agency located in Poughkeepsie, NY with a mission to help families and individuals help themselves through direct services, collaboration and advocacy. Family Services provides services to youth, family, and crime victims through a number of programs. Family Services’ is located in and maintains the Family Partnership Center which houses 15 not-for-profit agencies offering a number of different services the community.

 

Programs: This position oversees the youth programs: the Teen Resource Activity Center (TRAC), Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) Program, the After School Program(s) , Summer Youth Employment Program and Childcare Center at Dutchess County Family Court. 

The After School Program operates out of four elementary schools in Poughkeepsie, NY. It currently services over 170 elementary school students, under the age of 13. The program offers enrichment activities, sports, arts/crafts and assistance with school work. This program has been in operation since 2000. 

Family Services participates in the GIVE initiative in collaboration with the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department implements the Phoenix Curriculum, an evidence based program that successfully targets the risk and protective factors for gang and gun violence through workshops within the community. This program was accepted as evidence-based by the National Gang Center/OJJDP/Bureau of Justice Assistance. 

The TRAC provides a safe environment for local teens to participate in and take advantage of community services opportunities, academic assistance, recreational activities and sporting events. TRAC provides local teens with the following activities and resources: computers with internet access, academic support, performing and visual arts, football, basketball, softball, dance/social events, field trips, , life skills workshops and job readiness s resources/materials. This program operates Monday through Friday, from 4 pm to 9 pm. 

Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP): Through Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board, Family Services places youth ages 14 to 20 in minimum wage work experiences, and oversees their employment in both Poughkeepsie and Beacon. Youth work for six weeks during July and August, and placements are made in both public agencies and private non-profits. Types of work include clerical, custodial, teacher's aides, library assistants, food preparation and recreational aides. 

The Childcare Center at Family Court provides a safe haven for children while their parent/guardian engages in business at the Dutchess Family Court. The program operates Monday-Thursday from 9-5 and serves children of all ages. 

Position and Essential Responsibilities: Under the direction of the Vice President for Community Programs, coordinates and supervises assigned program activities in accordance with agency policies and procedures; supervises direct service staff; and develops program initiatives to increase the capacity of the agency to fulfill its mission. Responsible for program development including seeking funding and writing and managing grants for a number of sources including government and foundations.  

Responsibilities: 

The Associate Director is responsible for:  

  • After School Program  

1. Responsible for hiring, training and supervision of after school management staff, after school teaching staff, interns and volunteers and facilitating staff development to ensure that after school staff and interns are appropriately trained to meet agency and program requirements under the NYS SACC regulations in accordance with OCFS standards and practices 

2.  

3. Generates and maintains all required records, reports and statistical data for programs, including quarterly reports to OCFS in compliance with grant requirements and NYS SACC regulations. 

4. Works in conjunction with school district principals, faculty and staff to strengthen professional relationship between the agency and schools 

5. Provides supervision for After School Program Site Supervisors and completes performance evaluations. 

6. Represents the agency as needed in the community (e.g., serving on committees, making presentations on our programs, and so forth.) 

7. Participates in team meetings and staff meetings, as well as participate in in-service trainings, as appropriate. 

8. Participates in supervision with the Vice President for Community Programs as an employee of the agency. 

9. Maintains the quality assurance standards set by the agency in providing service to clients and colleagues. 

10. Other duties as assigned.  

  • TRAC Program  

1. Under the supervision of the Vice President for Community Programs, participate in the smooth operation of the Teen Center in relation to ensuring adequate staffing, preparation of setting (whether on-site or off-site), needed equipment and supplies, and scheduling events in providing direct services. 

2. Supervision of staff and volunteers. 

3. Act as a liaison with outside agencies in relation to referrals, disseminating information 

4. Participate in acquisition, planning and implementation in relation to expansion of program services or new program components. 

5. Participate in accountability measures in relation to evaluation components of direct service (e.g. distributing & collecting feedback questionnaires, collating data) 

6. Provide direct supervision of teens, in any Teen Center function, including functioning as a Team Leader, serving as Door Monitor, participating in recreational activities, supervising community meetings, facilitating staff meetings, etc. 

7. Completion of other tasks as needed, to meet the needs of the Teen Center and the Agency. 

8. Generates and maintains all required records, reports and statistical data for program, including contract requirements and grant writing 

9. Other duties as assigned  

  • GIVE Program  

1. Supervision of staff and volunteers. 

2. Act as a liaison with outside agencies in relation to referrals, disseminating information 

3. Generates and maintains all required records, reports and statistical data for program, including contract requirements with the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department and DCJS. 

4. Other duties as assigned  

  • Summer Youth Employment Programs  

1. Supervision of staff and youth workers to ensure accordance with NYS Labor Laws 

2. Act as a liaison with outside agencies in relation to referrals, disseminating information 

3. Generates and maintains all required records, reports and statistical data for program, including contract requirements with the Dutchess County Workforce Investment Board 

4. Other duties as assigned  

  • Child Care Center at Family Court  

1. Supervision of staff and volunteers. 

2. Act as a liaison with outside agencies in relation to referrals, disseminating information 

3. Generates and maintains all required records, reports and statistical data for program, including contract requirements with the NYS Office of Court Administration 

4. Provide leadership and facilitation of advisory board 

5. Other duties as assigned 

Skills and Abilities:  

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision 
  • Excellent administrative skills 
  • Strong verbal and written skills

· Ability to work effectively when under extreme pressure 

· Possess compassion and empathy 

Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor's in human services, social work, psychology, or related field required. Masters degree in social work, human services or related field preferred. 
  • Previous experience in youth services, administration, supervision, grant writing, and program development. 
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and computer skills.
