This short term teaching position with our Summer Learning Program (SLP) runs from late June through mid August. Successful candidates will be also be available for 10 - 20 paid hours between April and the start of the program, including up to three two-hour Saturday workshops. If you are an experienced teacher of children under the age of five, especially if you've worked with English language learners, please apply. The IRIS Summer Learning Program will have 20 - 35 early learning students per day, mostly from Africa and the Middle East, at a location in or near New Haven. The SLP Pre-School Readiness Teacher will lead this group, aided by many interns and volunteers, with management and input from the program manager students.

Job Summary & General Responsibilities

The Summer Learning Program Preschool Readiness Teacher (SLPPSRT) will assist with the facilitation of daily programming for 20-35 ELL refugee students between the ages of 0 and 4.5 who are enrolled in the IRIS Summer Learning Program. The students will be divided into two separate age and level appropriate groups to promote early learning and social success. The SLPPSRT will be responsible for contributing to a positive learning environment and assisting daily with a class of up to 25 students with a team of volunteers and interns to meet daily needs of students.

Schedule / Hours

The IRIS SLP could run from the last week of June through August 16th, in which case it will be a half day program requiring your availability Monday through Friday between 8am and 1pm, although you will not always average 5 hours per day. The SLP might run for the month of July only, in which case the program day will be approximately 2 hours longer. Please indicate whether these different schedules are acceptable or, if not, what your availability is.

Specific Duties

• Lead a class of up to 25 ELL preschool students of similar ages and levels with the help of a group of interns and volunteers.

• Create the best possible language-rich learning environment for the students in the classroom by addressing challenges early and working closely and communicating well with team members.

• Plan, review, and re-evaluate curriculum and daily lesson plans with the Mother & Child ESOL Class Project Manager on a daily basis to best meet the needs of students.

• In conjunction with curriculum and lesson planning, assist in creating a list of necessary learning and program supplies.

• Join brief team morning meetings to review lesson plans and daily projects, and afternoon meetings to review and plan for the next day.

• Collaborate with ESL program staff and volunteers to facilitate interactive literacy activities with the children and their mothers. 

• Assist in the planning and supervision of regular indoor/outdoor recreational activities both on and off site to promote exercise, healthy living habits, and language development.
