Reports to: Executive Director and Clinical Director

Salary:  The salary for this position is $40,000-50,000 per year. This position also includes paid sick leave and personal time off / vacation.

About the Role:

The Maternal Coalition and Rainier Valley Midwives (see below for about the organizations) are partnering to run a pilot program, co-creating a model that will train and deploy community-based Perinatal Health Doulas into the community to reach the hardest to reach pregnant people and families. The multifaceted role will work with RVM staff at multiple sites, to connect, support, and improve healthcare navigation skills for pregnant people and families. 

This position is funded for one year, during which time you will receive training, ongoing support, and direct access to healthcare professionals to have your questions answered and to help connect community members to get their healthcare needs met. You will be responsible for ongoing work with representatives of The Maternal Coalition and Rainier Valley Midwives to build out a replicable model of service for PHDs. As a PHD you will support families as they navigate their health care experience during the perinatal year using a strengths-based, collaborative model. We know that understanding what matters to community, and how community identifies health and outcomes, starts from within.   

We are seeking natural leaders and those with an interest in pregnancy, childbirth, and early parenting who want to learn some new skills and combine those with their talents, experience, and passion to families.  

Our training is accessible and inclusive, and this position is open to community leaders regardless of level of previous education.  

You will learn and work closely with a multidisciplinary team of providers, doulas, social workers, and lactation counselors.  

Required Skills, Abilities, Competencies

  • Established leadership in school and life history
  • Lived experience in childbirth, raising children, and the experiences of navigating complex systems
  • Has predictable transportation plan to attend clinic and and community meetings, travel to multiple sites, and to connect with staff as an outside trusted partner and resource

  • Ability to work independently, multi-task, and deliver polished, professional outputs of outstanding quality on time
  • Ability to advocate for birth equity and birth rights
  • Ability to be organized in an environment that requires continuous monitoring of priorities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrates cross-cultural sensitivity and ability to build respectful relationships with colleagues from diverse cultural, economic, linguistic, and educational backgrounds
  • Skilled writer, able to help prepare reports and use verbal and written communication to work with team
  • Able to use online collaboration platforms to improve workflow
  • Willingness to learn and adapt
  • Ability to connect with families needing deep support around access to basic services, lactation support, or other critical support systems during the perinatal and postpartum period
  • Comfort with using technology to connect with others (zoom, text, phone)
  • Demonstrated commitment to community and sensitivity working with a variety of people from low-income populations, with diverse educational, lifestyle, ethnic, religious, and cultural origins; disabled, homeless, substance users, HIV (AIDS) infected, and/or physiologically impaired.
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Ability to abide by standards of professional ethics and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to potentially work during the evenings and on weekends to visit sites such as overnight homeless shelters


Supervision

Immediately responsible to the Clinical Director

Responsible to Licensed and Nurse Midwives who will supervise clinical placement

 

Work Environment

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment, online mobile apps for work product sharing and collaboration, and electronic records. This position requires access to transportation to attend home visit, and meetings in the city, county, and state.

Ongoing work with Executive director will establish a work plan to identify key priorities and long-term strategies

Physical Demands and Expected Hours

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to walk up and down stairs safely and lift and carry up to 30 pounds if needed. 
  • This is a full-time, permanent position. Flexibility in hours is encouraged to meet the needs of the families in the communities we serve. The position regularly requires evening and weekend hours.
  • Weekly meetings are required with your clinical supervisor, which will be established at a time that is convenient for you and them.
  • Weekly team meetings on Tuesday mornings from 10:15-11:00am are required. 
  • During the pandemic, this position may include the need to connect with families on zoom or on the phone. RVM establishes protocols for safe interactions with families, including the use of telehealth, proper protective equipment, and social distancing. You will be expected to follow the protocols and to teach safe engagement to the families in your care.

The South Seattle Women’s Health Foundation is dedicated to creating spaces for high quality, individualized perinatal and aligned healthcare, education, and support for families living in typically underserved communities through the vehicle of community-based healthcare. We were founded in 2015 and are a 501c3 non-profit organization. Rainier Valley Midwives (RVM) is our midwifery clinic dedicated to providing comprehensive perinatal care in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team. Our mission is to improve parent and infant health outcomes through midwifery-led, community-based, reproductive and pregnancy care for BIPOC families in the Greater Seattle Area. We train and mentor the next generation of providers of color to heal our communities from within. We envision a world where all pregnant people and families have equitable access to high quality, compassionate, and culturally relevant healthcare.

Salary and Benefits

This is a 1.0 FTE/ 40 hours per week position. The salary for this position is $35,000-50,000 per year. This position also includes paid sick leave and personal time off / vacation.
