CFO Executive Director 

Culture for One (CFO) seeks an experienced nonprofit leader as full-time Executive Director (ED).  The ED is responsible for ensuring the delivery of CFO’s mission, building and stewarding the resources (generating annual operating income) to support needed infrastructure and deliver programming. Succeeding the CFO’s founding ED, the organization hopes to engage a new ED who will lead the organization into its next phase of growth and development. The ED is the primary spokesperson, strategist and operational leader for the organization and reports directly to the Board of Directors.



·      Establish long-range goals, strategies, plans, and policies, keeping in mind the goals of organizational growth and sustainability

·      Build awareness & support for CFO’s vision and mission

·      Lead, motivate, and inspire the CFO team and board to achieve the organization’s mission and goals

·      Manage organizational growth and infrastructure development

Operations & Management

·       Ensure that programs are in alignment with CFO values, vision, and mission

·      Work with Program Director to develop programs that directly serve youth in foster care and build partnerships with local agencies, schools & cultural organizations to serve more youth and further relationships with individual program participants

·      Work with Special Initiatives Director to develop and implement strategic fundraising efforts that result in boosting revenue and partnerships, as well as expanding the range and quality of services to NYC youth in foster care and further relationships with individual program participants

·       Attract, retain, and develop a high-quality staff and consultants 

·      Manage staff, consultants and collaborators 

·       Inspire & motivate CFO’s team to perform to the best of their abilities, maximizing staff talents/skills

·       Provide CFO team with guidance, mentoring, & training 

·       Ensure that sound management practices and systems are in place 

·       Ensure the organization’s compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local tax, corporate and other laws and policies governing corporations and nonprofit organizations

Fundraising & Development

·      Direct and oversee the development team (both internal and external) and all development activities including major gifts program, grant proposals, charity auctions and annual fundraising campaigns and events to meet annual fundraising goals

·      Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with current and prospective funders, program officers, major donors, and other prospects

Financial Management

·      Direct and oversee the finance team (both internal and external) and all financial activities including budgeting, record-keeping, financial reporting, analysis, cash management and investment practices

·      Develop & maintain sound financial practices that ensure financial viability of the organization

·      Supervise financial record-keeping

·      Oversee grant expenditures, reporting, audits and ensure compliance 

·      Manage the financial health of the organization and its programs and develop plans to ensure that adequate funds are available for CFO to carry out its work

External Relations 

·      Represent CFO with participants, funders, organizational partners, the community, industry, media, government, and other agencies

·      Raise CFO’s visibility and promote the organization’s activities, programs, and goals

·      Cultivate relationships and more formal partnerships with community organizations and other service providers who complement the service offerings of CFO

·      Direct and oversee the communications team (both internal and external) and all marketing/branding activities including social media, website, media relations and promotional materials

Governance/Board Relations

·       Act as liaison to Board and provide staff support to the Board and its committees

·       Provide the Board with regular reports of the organization’s progress and activities, including financial, program, and operational reports as necessary for the Board to conduct effective oversight, set policies, and determine the organization’s direction

·       Engage the Board appropriately in fiscal, program, and policy oversight, and in strategic planning, fundraising, and public relations

·       Work with Board to bring on new Board members who can contribute to CFO’s success


Education: Four-year college degree (BS/BA) in Business, Communications, Marketing, Finance or Non-profit Administration or equivalent experience required. Prefer Master's degree in Public or Business Administration or Non-profit Management.

Experience: Minimum of 5 years related experience. Demonstrated ability to exercise good and timely judgment in complex situations. Demonstrated ability for strong communications and influencing skills along with public speaking and writing. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement fundraising strategies. Demonstrated ability to build sustain community relationships/partnerships. Proven experience in influencing others and building relationships.

Management Experience: Minimum 3 years related management/supervisory experience. 

Experience working in an environment requiring flexibility and managing change.

Other: Proficient with MS Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Familiarity with federal state and local employment laws.

Through exposure to the arts and engagement with caring adults, we help these most at-risk youth build confidence, acquire life skills, connect with positive role models and identify new interests, as well as improve their academic performance.  Culture For One’s programs deliver sources of motivation and individual support these young people need to thrive … not just survive. 

Launched in 2010 with one cultural experience for one child hosted by one caring volunteer, Culture for One has developed a robust program of arts experiences for NYC children in foster care and has touched the lives of over 6,000 youth in the past 7 years.  CFO is now well established with:

·       A multi-faceted and effective program of cultural experiences and individualized opportunities for youth in foster care including enriching cultural & career excursions, art scholarships, creative workshops, and next steps mentoring and support, along with individual encouragement. 

·       A dedicated program staff of five people and a team of committed volunteers and instructors.

·       A network of cultural resource partners including New York City Ballet, Harlem School of the Arts, MCC Theater, The Park Avenue Armory, Friends of the High Line, The Guggenheim Museum, New York International Children’s Festival, ArtsConnection, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, 92ndStreet Y, and The Children’s Museum of the Arts. 

·       Foster Care Agency & School Partners including Forestdale Inc., ACS Children’s Center, JCCA, and Good Shepherd Services, The Foundling, Restart Academy, and Mott Haven Academy.

·       A core group of almost 250 funders and supporters resulting in the fundraising capacity to generate $550,000 - $650,000 annually and cover the costs of program delivery

·       Approximately $200,000 in net assets
