About Monument Academy

Working with the most at-risk adolescents and established on an innovative model integrating excellent academics with evidence-based, trauma-informed practices, Monument Academy is a weekday boarding school that opened in the 2015-2016 school year with a 5th grade class of 40 students and will have 160 students when we reach full enrollment through 8th grade in 2018/19. The school is currently authorized to expand to 8th grade and maintains the goal of growing through high school so that students will graduate from Monument Academy.

The mission of Monument Academy is to provide students, particularly those who have had or might have contact with the foster care system, with the requisite academic, social, emotional, and life skills to be successful in college, career, and community, and to create an outstanding school that attracts, supports, and retains exceptional and caring people. Monument Academy will fulfill its mission by providing stability, adult connection, high-quality academics, therapeutic support, and life skills for pre-teens and teens. Monument Academy graduates will be prepared for post-secondary education, on a career trajectory, and have the social, emotional, and self-care skills to maintain a healthy, connected, and economically self-supporting life.

About the Position

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will report directly to the Head of School providing operational and strategic oversight across all school operations. The COO will manage three distinct bodies of work: Human Resources, School Operations and Logistics, School Systems, and the Office of Family and Community Engagement.  The COO will direct the these teams to ensure quality services and increased operational efficiencies in support of the core mission of providing excellent academic, residential and well being supports to our students. The current operating budget for Monument Academy is approximately $10 million. The COO will partner with the Head of School, President and Chief Executive Officer on all aspects of the Monument Academy’s non-program operations and will be the primary conduit between the Administrative and Program teams.

Staff Management

  • Manage three direct reports to ensure high quality delivery of operations support to the program units at Monument Academy.  
  • Manage overall quality of operations performance and customer service, analyzing service performance and customer satisfaction data to set and achieve continuous improvement goals
  • Manage and support the human resource function which includes compensation, benefits, and payroll; employee relations, staff policies, and labor compliance; and contributions to functions managed with other departments.
  • Oversee the management over the following functions:

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required; MBA or Master's Degree in related field preferred
  • 10+ years relevant experience required, including prior demonstrated organizational leadership experience
  • Strong operational, and/or strategic experience, with preference for 5+ years of progressively increasing management experience and strategic planning for a growing, multi-site organization
  • Experience leading, planning and managing in an entrepreneurial, client-oriented setting
  • Excellent management, communication, public relations, customer service, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement and manage business systems and processes to support a growing multi-million dollar organization across the majority of operations functions required for the position
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute a strategic growth plan for either a non-profit or for-profit organization, including development of regional management structure
  • Ability to negotiate and execute contracts and manage the quality of service providers and vendors
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment in decision-making
  • Adept at thinking strategically, translating plans into action, and exhibiting excellent judgment
  • Excellent writing, speaking, and presenting skills, and a keen attention to detail
