Position Summary

The Academic Director oversees the academic programming and growth of Antigua Green School, ensuring an education that is green, bilingual and progressive. The successful candidate will supervise academic staff, develop best practices for teachers, and evaluate the progress of educational approaches. The Academic Director is a key member of a collaborative community dedicated to developing new generations of responsible and engaged global citizens.

Responsibilities and Expectations

Curriculum and Planning

  • Develop scope and sequence that integrates Green School curriculum framework and the Cambridge International curriculum across the entire school.
  • Work with the general director to incorporate the Antigua Green School vision into academic strategy.
  • Oversee integration of Green School and Cambridge curriculums.
  • Ensure that Antigua Green School academic principles are practiced in elementary and secondary schools.
  • Supervise, counsel and manage the entire academic team to maintain exceptional educational quality.
  • Provide trainings as needed on Green School and Cambridge curriculums.
  • Conduct classroom observations and collect data on instructional practices and student learning.
  • Identify areas for improvement, develop strategies and provide direct feedback to the academic team in regular meetings.
  • Provide new teacher training focused on developmentally-appropriate practices.
  • Encourage collegial conversations about teaching methods and student learning to ensure proper execution of the Green School and Cambridge curriculum. Collaborate in quarterly professional development programs. 
  • Conduct annual (or more frequent, as needed) teacher evaluations, helping them set their professional goals and guiding them to achieve their goals.
  • Participate in and occasionally lead weekly staff and team meetings.

Communication

  • Communicate with families regarding academic initiatives and be available for questions.
  • Represent the school in discussions with families regarding academic performance. 

Educational Structure 

  • Review the integration of Green School and Cambridge curriculums and make recommendations for academic strategy.
  • Participate in the design of annual school calendar.
  • Manage the design and logistics of class schedules.
  • Research and implement, as appropriate, best practices in green and progressive education.
  • Implement and support lesson planning and record-keeping guidelines.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in education or related field with a focus on progressive practices.
  • Knowledge of Cambridge International curriculum, or similar international curriculum.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and providing feedback for a team, either in education or elsewhere.
  • Knowledge in curricular, instructional and alternative assessment best practices.
  • Proactive and creative thinker able to enter new environments with flexibility and confidence.
  • Experience living in a new culture.
  • Bilingual English-Spanish speaker strongly preferred.
