YOUR POSITION WITH TNC

This is a full-time, term position (to mid August 2021). Housing provided. Technician position will implement the Verde Program Water Monitoring Protocol and provide recommendations on modifications of the protocol annually. This position will require field work in the Cottonwood, Camp Verde, and Cornville areas. Technician will regularly interact with the Verde Team Staff and with landowners and partners to collect data on private and public lands.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Implement the Verde Program Water Monitoring Protocol under the direction of Verde Water Ag Project Coordinator and Verde team staff.
  • Conduct stream flow measurement in Verde River, its tributaries and irrigation ditches using schedule they develop based on the protocol document. Existing sites have been identified but new sites may need to be identified.
  • Complete data entry into Excel and Access database.
  • Perform basic data analysis of flow data.
  • Download data from telemetry systems and import data into database for ditch measurements.
  • Service flow gaging stations and automated head gates with direction from Verde Staff.
  • Coordinate with science staff and consultants on data review and report development.
  • Perform stewardship duties on the Shield Ranch and other project sites (such as fence repair, trail building, and general ranch house maintenance). 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Receives instructions to complete required tasks.
  • Performs responsibilities based on protocol with minimal supervision.
  • Collects field data independently.
  • Consult with supervisor to develop plans for resolution of unusual or complex problems.
  • Make day-to-day decisions as delegated by supervisor.
  • Ability to function productively as a member or leader of a work team.
  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain, and physical ability to traverse and hike over rough terrain.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED; and 6 months of related experience.
  • Physically able to traverse and hike over rough terrain
  • Capable of considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • Good written and verbal communications skills
  • Experience with MS Office, including Access
  • Strong interest in environmental conservation
  • Valid driver license
  • Occasionally lift 25 pounds.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • College related coursework and conservation experience desirable
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
  • Experience driving a manual transmission.
  • Experience following instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.
  • Strong interest in the mission and activities of The Nature Conservancy

Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
