This position works with and oversees the Animal Care Team as part of the Animal Health and Welfare side of the organization. This is a supervisory position that is responsible for the overall operations of the care center including animal and facility care, pathway planning, and staff training and engagement. You are responsible for clearly communicating job expectations, job training, and holding staff accountable to the approved procedures. This position is an assistant to the Care Center Manager and acts as that person’s designee and as the Care Center’s lead in his or her absence.

This position supervises up to twenty five (25) Animal Care Specialists (in conjunction with the Animal Care Supervisor). You help keep the Animal Care and Behavior programs united in vision, goals, and initiatives. You work to constantly upgrade the quality of life for our animal residents, including in-kennel enrichment and out-of-kennel socialization time. You also work with Care Center Managers and the Director of Animal Welfare to continue expanding and improving the Animal Care program overall, as well as lend support to other departments (via guidance, training, monitoring, and reinforcing) in the pursuit of a Fear Free shelter environment.

Our ideal candidate has experience working in an animal shelter setting and familiarity with companion, exotic, and livestock husbandry and care. You must be comfortable handling shelter dogs, cats, rabbits, and guinea pigs. You are excited to take on the unique challenges and rewards of working with a large team of dedicated shelter staff and volunteers. You also enjoy sharing your skill and knowledge with others in order to improve quality of care in the shelter, decrease stress, and continually expand the scope of our programs. You are self-motivated and able to work independently. Overall, you are passionate about animal welfare and about the people who make quality care possible, and you are eager to be at the helm of a progressive and expansive program.


Supervision and staff management (50%)

  • Directly supervise staff. This includes, but is not limited to, setting their work schedule; providing training, resources and support; establishing goals and objectives; and providing frequent feedback regarding their work performance.
  • Implement and monitor care center based programs to meet and exceed the standards of humane animal care and customer service to the animals and the community. This may include cleaning kennels and attending directly to animals when staffing requires.
  • Develop and foster supportive working relationships amongst and between ACC staff of different departments, including resolution of conflict.
  • Provide professional development for staff.
  • Ensure a safe and supportive working environment.
  • Regular check-ins with direct reports in which they both provide and receive feedback on their development and progress within the department.
  • Set the standard for professionalism, attitude, punctuality, and responsiveness by modeling desired behavior.
  • Facilitate communication at all levels.
  • Support Behavior and Animal Care program leaders in the shelters.
  • Participate in staff hiring, evaluations, and disciplinary actions as needed.
  • Alongside the Animal Health and Welfare leadership team, ensures that the shelter is following all guidelines as set forth by the law and government contracts, that safety procedures are being followed, and OSHA standards are met at all times.
  • Responsible for being available on call after hours and must be willing to work rotating shifts, including nights, holidays, and weekends. 

Administrative (30%)

  • Inventory tracking and supply monitoring
  • Weekly supply ordering
  • Complete weekly time cards for direct-reports.
  • Approve time off and organize coverage.
  • Track and provide monthly metrics to measure the effect of each program.
  • Respond in a timely manner to emails and requests.

Program development (20%)

  • Address programmatical challenges and areas in need of improvement.
  • Innovate new approaches to problem areas.
  • Implement and monitor Fear Free standards in the Care Centers.
  • Develop new protocols and procedures to further improve the enrichment program.


Management and/or supervisory experience. Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as conflict resolution skills. Ability to work flexible hours and days, including nights and weekends, as needed. Ability to interact with animals in a calm and non-threatening manner. Demonstrated leadership and team-building qualities. Working knowledge of Excel, PowerPoint and Microsoft applications, plus ability to learn new computer programs. Ability to plan and operate within a budget. Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds.

Education and Work Experience

High School diploma or GED required. College degree preferred but will take into account years of experience in lieu of degree. At least 3 years’ experience working in animal welfare.

Work Environment

Ability to work in an animal care facility where euthanasia is performed, and remain calm and in control in stressful situations. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently exposed to odors or airborne particles including animal fur and toxic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment may be very loud.
