Overview of Position: The Director of Business Development leads the team responsible for expanding GoodWeave’s presence and visibility within carpet and home textile industries by making the business case for ensuring child labor-free supply chains. This position will oversee the current importer and retailer base (licensees) comprised of more than 185+ companies that import and sell GoodWeave certified products and generate license fees of over $700,000 annually. The Director of Business Development also builds the pipeline of prospective company partners and secures new licensee new account relationships. Importer accounts include global companies that currently design and import products from India and Nepal. Retail accounts include individual stores and showrooms and mass merchants that sell these imported products. S/he will support GoodWeave’s efforts to build business partnerships in new and expanding sectors including fashion jewelry and apparel, and will spearhead partner marketing and co-branding initiatives and targeted communications activities. 

Specific duties include:

  • Develop Strategic Business Plan that identifies opportunities, addresses challenges and secures new business to expand the reach of the certification into new supply chains
  • Establish and oversee tactical quarterly and annual workplans to achieve business targets established in the Strategic Business Plan.
  • Build strong relationships with importers and retailers that sustain existing and lead to new GoodWeave licensing relationships.
  • Negotiate and execute contracts.
  • Design effective sales and marketing tools and collateral (print, electronic and social media) in line with the GoodWeave’s global messaging guidelines to increase sales and market acceptance of certified rugs and home textiles through retail channels.
  • Manage accounts for importer and retailer associates and launch joint marketing activities.
  • Represent GoodWeave at industry trade shows and events to educate the industry on child labor issues and GoodWeave’s approach.
  • Foster and maintain relationships with key export suppliers in producer countries (India, Nepal and Bangladesh).
  • Coordinate with program, standards and certification and finance teams to ensure cross functional operations and activities are well coordinated.
  • Supervise and direct a Business Development Manager.

Candidate must thrive in an autonomous, fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. GoodWeave’s nonprofit-business hybrid model requires business-oriented staff, committed to changing the way business is being done.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of sales or marketing experience in consumer products or socially responsible business environment.
  • Previous experience as a Sales or Brand Manager in textile-related industry preferred.
  • Passion for GoodWeave’s mission and socially driven business model.
  • Solid writing, business planning, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to “close a deal”.
  • Thorough understanding of marketing elements (including traditional and digital marketing such as SEO/Social media etc.) and market research methods.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a department and department staff members.
  • MBA or comparable degree preferred.
  • Travel is required.

Experience with supply chain issues, sustainable consumption, and/or socially responsible business a plus.
