New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI), a community-driven civil rights organization, seeks a talented Development Manager for Individual Giving to join its team.  

About the Role 

Reporting to the Director of Development, the Development Manager will play a critical role in fundraising to support NYLPI’s program operation and further its growth goals. The Development Manager will be charged with improving individual giving systems, supporting and performing direct fundraising by engaging, cultivating, and soliciting individual donors, and assisting in the overall efforts of the development department. 

The Development Manager will spend much of their time on activities related to identifying, researching, qualifying, engaging, cultivating, renewing, and securing gifts to increase individual support for NYLPI. Working in close collaboration with a small, results-oriented team, the Development Manager will have the opportunity to leverage proven programs to attract the support of individuals and family foundations, as well as working to secure broad-­based and attorney volunteer giving.  

RESPONSIBILITIES 

Serving as a key member of the NYLPI team, the Development Manager will provide support in all areas of fundraising, including:  

Cultivation and Solicitation of New Donors  

  • Plan and execute at least two annual small-scale fundraising/cultivation/donor appreciation events including NYLPI’s annual Felix A. Fishman Awards Event held each year in the fall. The Development Manger will manage all aspects of the event and logistics, including invitation and RSVP lists, and vendor relationships.  
  • In collaboration with the Director of Development, develop cultivation and stewardship plans that create a high-quality donor experience. Plans will include regular correspondence, thoughtful donor engagement and invitations, professional proposals, mailings, and acknowledgements. 
  • Develop a pipeline for individual giving new prospects and returning donors.  
  • Manage a portfolio of individual donors, employing strategic moves management to secure annual commitments.  
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director and Director of Development, the Development Manager will employ cultivation tools – including personal visits, materials, and other creative means -- to introduce and engage new individuals with NYLPI’s mission.  
  • Assist the Development Department in planning and execution of major fundraising events. 

Appeals and Campaigns 

  • Create compelling fundraising letters, pages, and campaign messaging.   
  • Project manage at least two annual individual giving campaigns, including direct mail and online campaigns.  
  • Collaborate with the Director of Development on new joint fundraising campaigns.  
  • Partner with the Pro Bono Advisory Council to conduct a peer-to-peer fundraising campaign.  
  • Create a donor recognition and stewardship plan.  

Prospect Research and Database Management   

  • Serve as the Development Department’s in-house fundraising database expert.  
  • Perform strategic prospect research and develop meeting briefs for new/existing donors.  
  • Maintain accurate and timely records on donor contact.  
  • Using NYLPI’s donor database, Raiser’s Edge NXT, create reports to analyze trends related to individual giving.  
  • Identify system improvements to support NYLPI’s individual giving efforts.  

QUALIFICATIONS 

Required  

  • Experience with cultivation and direct solicitation of individual donors.  
  • Organized self-starter, able to prioritize tasks and projects, and to meet deadlines.  
  • Strong writing and communication skills. 
  • Ability to build relationships with and craft messages for diverse stakeholders. 
  • Ability to work well with team members. 
  • Commitment to social justice and civil rights. 

Preferred 

  • Three to five years of fundraising experience  
  • Proficiency with Raiser’s Edge NXT or similar donor database software. 
  • Familiarity with, and understanding of, generally accepted accounting principles and state  fundraising regulations; 
  • Experience with managing and supporting online events, including Zoom, Facebook Live, YouTube, etc.  
  • Knowledge of the New York City philanthropic community.
